Mafia II is coming!
Yeah I agree Mafia was a brilliant game. What made it good was the fact they they chose to gradually absorb you into the story.
Many developers today make the mistake of thinking that throwing a gamer stright into the action is a good thing, but it does nothing to immerse the player in the story. I have grown tired of having no prologue type beginning to games anymore... and whilst the drone-headed mindless gamer might appreciate being air-lifted to a shooting spree within the frist 10 seconds of a game, a lot of gamers (such as myself and many others here I can only assume) like the idea of being able to gradually get to know the setting and the characters before getting into the nitty-gritty.
That's what made Mafia great... you felt something when you played that made you identify with the setting and the atmosphere and the characters.
I hope Mafia 2 is the same, and I hope it does not become as Ghetto-pretentious as the GTA series.

My sentiments exactly. Mafia, The Godfather and Max Payne are the only three action games where I have actually cared about the characters and have become intrigued by the story enough to have late gaming sessions until midnight and finish the game in a week.Cubase wrote:Yeah I agree Mafia was a brilliant game. With Mafia, I was automatically intrigued with the arbitrary, everyday character who was just living his life. Then one day, he's one of the most dangerous and influential men in the city. It's the quintessential zero to hero (or zero to corruption) story but with the right substance to fill in the familiar areas. I felt a reasonable level of concern for the characters, looking over my shoulder as I was running away from the cops, hoped my wife and child would be safe and nearly shed a tear with the sudden death ending- this will be a tough act to follow. However, Mafia 2 does look promising.
As long as it introduces some new gameplay elements, doesn't blindly conform with GTA, has an amazing soundtrack and maintains the integrity for story and character, this is going to be amazing. The graphics are spectacular so far. We're 1 quarter of the way there.
I also add Aliens vs Predator 2 to that list - the first two Marine levels are without any enemies at all (just creepy sounds all around you, ghost trackings on the motion scanner, etc) Really eerie stuff.
Also, there's intros, cutscenes and plenty of storytelling being done within the singleplayer campaigns, and it's all neatly tied together. I love it.
I'm getting into Bioshock later today, am looking forward to it.

Pirates, vampires, zombies, ninjas, ghouls, aliens, goblins, monsters, robots, sorcerers, undead, werewolves, demons, mutated dinosaur-cyborgs and those pesky phone salesmen! The shotgun is a one-size-fits-all solution!
Cub, I used to be the same way. Until Call of Duty 3 was released for consoles ONLY. At that point I decided I'd give it a real try, and after a short while you get over the fiddlyness and start kickin' ass and takin' names, just like you're used to with the keyboard and mouse combo.
I'm about... two, three hours maybe into Bioshock on the 360 now and I'm having a ball.
