First and last time I EVER use PayPal!
Oh my god... I am so pissed off!
So I am going to this party on Saturday, and there theme is superheroes and I have decided to get myself a Punisher T-shirt off Ebay... I buy it and then I have to pay... PayPal of course, never used it because I personally thought it sounded like bullshit, but seeing as it was the only form of payment that did not have a delay I would do it so I could get my shirt as soon as possible (before Saturday).
I enter my credit card details, and bob's your uncle, it does not accept them because apparently they have already been used by another account (WTF?)... no worries though, it appears as though my brother tried using the card in question back in 2003, but never made purchases (they were cancelled)... so I try and access my brothers account by doing a password recovery, and it says that the account never existed!
So now I have a credit card number floating in cyberspace that I cannot take of PayPal's records, thus preventing me from making any more online purchases!
And it looks as though I won't get my shirt in time for the party.
PayPal... you guys are pricks!
-Cub. =o)
P.S. Is PayPal even an instant form of payment anyway? Or is there a delay before transactions are confirmed before goods are sent? (I am asking whether or not it was a waste of my time anyway!)

Urgh, that pretty much confirms my opinion of EBAY. I've never liked it. EBAY is the internet equivalent of the sleazy docks that receive incoming good from overseas. It's a filthy cesspit for those who are desperate to make the extra buck.
I'm an Amazon man myself. I've ordered about 15 items, all received before their estimated arrival date. I paid with my MasterCard debit card. No worries, always the correct amount comes out and the goods arrive in perfect nick.

Calm down guys....
I make part of my living on EBAY and its not the scum filled hole you think it might be. In fact I can tell you from first hand experience (I have been buying and selling since 99 with over 2000 feedback) that there are probably 4-1 more crooked buyers than sellers. There are tons of honest folks trying to make a living on there. The vast majority of the issues I have experienced in 7 years are by far with bad buyers. You can find good deals and have great experiences. I cant tell you how many things I have purchased over the years from there.
TO cub..
Yes its an instant form of payment however the seller doesnt ship the same day usually. Unless you indicate an expidited form of shipment most sellers have 1 or 2 shipping days. So its very common for sellers to say ship only on a monday or tuesday. If you need an item quickly its always a good policy to ask the seller before you bid if you can request expidited shipping. Most sellers are more than happy to do this as long as you pay for the quicker method of shipping and ask before you bid.
Paypal has to be secure otherwise all heck can break loose, if you attached your card number to paypal and on another acct (which now doesnt show as active) you should be alble to contact customer support for help. Yes its a pain but its totaly understandable since we are talking about credit card numbers. You want them to error on the side of caution on this one.
I have used paypal for years to pay for and receive payments for my goods. 99% of every tranaction I do is pain free and without worry on my part. Yes they can be a pain about security and can hold you to the rules but frankly I see that as a good thing when dealing with bank accounts and credit cards.

Just letting off some steam that's all. Thanks for the tips McD...
The good news is I was able to get in touch with a workmate this evening who uses PayPal and got him to log into my Ebay account and pay on his PayPal service... I told him to leave a special instruction that it is due by Saturday evening, and within 60 minutes got a response from the seller saying that they had received payment and it will ship first thing tomorrow morning by express courier, and that they think I will be a hit at the party.
I personally have not had a bad experience with Ebay, ever, mind you I don't use it that often (this is probably my 5th usage of the service)... it more PayPal that grinded my gears. I usually prefer a direct account deposit ahead of anything else... but given the hard-line circumstances of this particular purchase, I was forced to use a method which was, in my opinion worthless for my needs. But I guess it did save my ass in the end.
I still won't use it again if I can avoid it because I prefer to control financed from my bank's own credit management system.
Anyway, I don't feel as 'punished' anymore... hehehe

Pirates, vampires, zombies, ninjas, ghouls, aliens, goblins, monsters, robots, sorcerers, undead, werewolves, demons, mutated dinosaur-cyborgs and those pesky phone salesmen! The shotgun is a one-size-fits-all solution!
Ignoring everything
(sorry cub I know your problem and I don't use PayPal because you are correct in being skeptic, No PayPal is NOT an instant payment system, It requires manual process to transfer the funds, depending on how reliable the person is it could take anything from an hour to over a month
)
For website owners its also something I'm trying to avoid. I for one think PayPal is a crap organisation and I think they are just mooching off other people's success. Word of advice, if you can avoid using Ebay entirely. I usually go direct and order my stuff via Fax as to keep my information safe.
Sometimes PayPal will let you get away with not having to use an account which is alright because that is instant, but if they site operator is a cheap arse they'll most likely opt for the crapier "sign in" system which I think is a scam.
Once again proving that ecommerce is not cheap, so don't think that PayPal is the most reliable method to do business. Also I've seen those Punnisher shirts around.

The major thing I like about Ebay is that I can find all sorts of rare items that in no way would I have access to if Ebay did not exist. For example, I have purchased several vintage household robots from the 80's that are extremely rare. These can pop up on Ebay fairly regularly, where-as I could spend years searching yard and garage sales and searching personal listings and possibly come up with nothing time and time again.
I've also purchased a few vintage fedoras through ebay, along with antiques (fans, lighters, rotary telephone, along with mp3 collections of hundreds of old time radio shows). I've never had a problem with a transaction in over six years and have even sold a handful if things without hitches. You just have to be careful; read peoples' feedback, and if you don't like the "vibe" of a certain persons' ad, just don't bid on it.

With PayPal you can either do things through your bank account or through your credit card. PayPal is pretty much just a go-between service that stores information so that you don't have to present your credit card or bank account details to others. In a way I feel its currently the easiest way of purchasing on eBay but then I don't know what kind of alternative options other countries have on eBay.
Doing it through your bank on PayPal is as said probably not instant I think. As it probably takes the bank time to verify it etc. In effect I think its pretty much like bank-to-bank tansfer (which can be fast or take longer depending on various factors I guess) except its PayPal-to-bank of course.
Using credit card though, as with all credit card purchases, is instant. When you've won the auction you get an email asking to Pay or if you do a Buy It Now of course you get a webpage asking if you want to Pay now. You go through that and get an invoice page stating all the costs. Then you continue and login to PayPal and get another confirmation page where you simply press "Pay" and there you go. You get a receipt email stating you've paid with a copy of the invoice etc. and thats it really.
As an aside I'm neither for or against PayPal, I'm aware of both the good and bad comments it gets. I just use it for eBay or for sites (very few) that can only deal with PayPal or for purchases from people on a forum (even rarer, only on 1 forum) since other options outside credit card in the UK I have come with too many loopholes. I've looked up all the alternatives and read both the good and bad for those as well as other PayPal competitors and haven't come up with anything that has worked as well for me so far so I stick with it.
I'm an avid figure collector so I've made quite alot of figure purchases on eBay for items that have gone out of production or complete sets of 'collect em all' type series
Not had a bad experience yet. Maybe had 1 or 2 iffy close calls but all worked out in the end. I always sift through the buyers feedback using this nifty tool:

I hear ya, Cub, but for a different reason. PayPal is gawdawfuluserunfriendly. It took me over 1/2 hr. to make a purchase (the blank PayPal screen that asked for info but provided no place to put it in and no "update" or "continue" button was the worst!).Cubase wrote:Oh my god... Never too late for coffee, never too early for beer.
Ever had trouble at your bank? Ever experience a problem at an ATM? Has your credit union ever made a mistake? C'mon, guys, Paypal is owned and operated by humans and therefore is subject to make mistakes.
I have bought and sold MANY items on Ebay and Paypal works fine. In fact, I prefer it to sending cash, checks or money orders. Granted, their rules can be a bit frustrating. But, keep this in mind: their rules are a protection - for you!
I feel your pain Cub, et al, but Paypal was and is and will be a great idea. And, if somebody makes a lot of money as CEO of Paypal, good for them. Why, why, didn't I think of it?!!!

The only problem I ever had with PayPal was the time where I had to verify my credit card as there were a bit of difficulties doing so. I had to contact my bank for a code of some sort that PayPal had sent to me in order for the credit card to be verified. Since that wasn't quite enough I ended up calling their customer support one day - and since that day I have had nothing but respect for PayPal. I've never experienced a problem since I got the verification through that phone call.
Man, their security rules are thorough when you call their customer support. Before you can even talk to a person you have to verify many things, which made me absolutely secure as I spoke to the person on the other line. They were also the friendliest people to talk to and always replied with a "Yes, Mr. Pedersen ... Your card is now verified, Mr. Pedersen" and so on ... in a way I was blown away by the service I got that I really don't hesitate one bit if I buy something that requires payment through PayPal. And that has happened a number of times since

My issues with paypal are that they store your credit card information, this is a big no no with online security. Most e commerce sites are required by law to only hold your details for 3-5 days after the purchase has been made and funds withdrawn (or at least thats how it is here in Australia). Any further transactions requires a resubmission of credit details. The other reason why I don't trust paypal is because anyone can have a PayPal shop, granted you have insurance and $#it but there is no guarantee that you'll be satisfied with the quality of your purchase, still I guess you can return it.. but I find that too much of a hassle frankly.
In house ecommerce sites are soo much better IMO, If I don't see an SSL running I know not to buy
128bit SSLs are technically unbreakable, when the 256bit ones come in (if that ever happens) ecommerce will be pretty secure apart from your DoS attacks. (which technically is the consumer's fault for not knowing better 50% of the time
)
