(Allegedly) really bad movies that only you seem to love

I was talking to a friend of mine the other day and we got into a discussion about The Godfather Trilogy. I told him that I actually love Godfather 3 due to the level of closure and emotion in the story, weak though some of the film's lesser moments were. I've learned that i'm actually in a minority when it comes to liking the Godfather 3 and it got me thinking about some other films that I only can relate to. How about you? I'll get the ball rolling.

The Godfather Part 3: Yes, Sophia Copola's acting is abysmal and the love story between the cousins was quite strange for a crime saga, but aside from that, I consider this film to be just as essential as the two which preceded it. The story flowed logically, Al Pacino's portrayal of Michael was as raw and emotional as its ever been. I also very much enjoyed the tension of the final "shoot out" scene. It's a shame Robert Duvaal and Francis Ford Copola couldn't see eye to eye on this project.

Back to the Future Part 2: i'm extremely surprised to learn that this is the least popular amongst the trilogy. I can't see why, it's actually my favourite. It has the humour of the first film with some sci-fi time travel sophistication that has been ripped off attrociously since this film. i loved the whole issue of rectifying the alternate time line, great stuff! I prefer this to Part 1 because it's more than just a love story and I prefer it to Part 3 because the story has so much more to offer than just a leap through time gone wrong. Don't get me wrong, the trilogy is terrific, but I can't see why people overlook Part 2 so much.

City Slickers 2: I thought Billy Crystal's one liners were amongst some of the best he's ever done on screen here. " Hey, there's something wrong with your cow. Ive been trying to get milk out of him for hours but still nothing " to which Mitch dryly replies "The cow's name is Norman...you were pulling on his dick!" I laughed hard when saw that the first time. There's plenty of other moments like this to be had in the film too. However, I do agree that the film dropped off in the final half hour.

Super Mario Brothers - The Movie: This is probably one that you'll disagree with me on the most...and that's fine. What I loved most about this film was that it made no attempt to blatantly replicate the environment of a game (Tomb Raider, Max Payne, Mortal Combat etc...) but instead developed an original environment for it to flourish in. It had a great mix of action, characters and some comedy. I thought Dennis Hopper was great in this. I saw it at the cinema when it first came out (I was about 10 years old) and walked away with a grin on my face just as I did for Independence Day. It's a fun, action, sci-fi adventure that didn't carry itself too seriously. You will never get me to dislike this film :)

Independence Day: it was corny then, it's still corny now and that's why it's brilliant. The macho dialogue, the pompous speach by the American President, the fact that America (yet again) saves the world, the Michael Bay style scenes of destruction plus Will Smith. Did I also mention own this on Bluray?

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull: i've heard a LOT of opposition to this as well. In fact, if you go to YouTube you'll find a few rants including an Australian, TMK, who has made 6 adjoining 10 minute videos expressing his hatred for the film. Yep, that's a one hour tirade. It has to be seen to be believed. I agree that it's the weakest of the film series but that doesn't prevent it from being an enjoyable movie too. It's got action, humour and a pretty well rounded story. Most of the objection actually is born out of the presence of interdimensional beings...my answer to this is that there are numerous theories actually linking relations between Myan culture and beings of this type.

Star Trek Nemesis: I acknowledge why people actually don't like this one. There are a few plot holes which are never addressed including the major one regarding how they cloned Jean Luc Picard. I still consider it to be a stronger film than its predecessor, Insurrection, but it was certainly no First Contact. But, for an action adventure, it worked.
Brain Donors... I can only find one other person who liked this movie so far... Everyone else I seem to show it to seems to really hate it... True it's basically pointless, but I think that's what I liked about it so much... It was a complete comedy no drama lined plot to mess with the comedy, just laughs from start to finish... Bob Nelson is just simply too funny in this movie accented by Mel Smith and the very funny John Turturro {if you are unfamiliar with him he played the Sector 7 guy in Transformers 1 & 2}...

Keep in mind that these comedians that I say are funny are simply my point of view of course... You yourself may dislike one, two, or all three of them...

The Godfather Part 3: It wasn't as good as the first two but I still liked it.

Back to the Future Part 2: I thought it was one of the best. I guess we're in a minority.

City Slickers 2: Never watched the first one either but there are a lot of sequels here. I remember John Cleese once saying (and it seems true) that sequels are rarely anywhere near as good as the original

Independence Day: I enjoyed this, though I also enjoyed the scene in X files where Mulder goes for a pee in front of a poster of this.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull: This worked brilliantly as a Tex story but I never saw Indy stories going into the land of make believe. I thought the Fate of Atlantis would have made a much better movie.

Star Trek Nemesis: - I wonder if that was in the original script but got lost in the cutting room? I like to think that such a big hole wasn't deliberately missed.

Some interesting movies. I dread to admit to liking anything bad, like Morons from Outer Space or something even worse.

Nothing But Trouble: This is a bizarre movie, and directed by Dan Aykroyd.

One day at college a guy was in my dorm to work on a project with me. My Nothing But Trouble DVD was sitting on top of my dresser and it fell behind it.

I went to get it and he asked me "What movie is that?

I said, "Oh, just some crappy movie I like that no one else does."

"What is it?"

"Nothing But Trouble."

"I love that movie!"

I love Army of Darkness. I know so few others who do.

Also, my secret shame - I like Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure

I LOVE this movie! Chevy Chase, Demi Moore, John Candy and Dan Ackroyd all in the one film! Loved it, especially the off-beat humour.
I thought I was the only one who thought that Back to the Future 2 was the best of the trilogy. The movie was pulpy, balsy and way out there. Great stuff.

Sorry, I hated Independence Day and I thought that the last Indy movie was pretty weak but NOT because of the whole extraterrestrial plot. You know you've made a bad movie when even the action scenes put people to sleep.

A few others:

Real Men (John Ritter, Jim Belushi).

The Island of Dr. Moreau (the Brando one)

I beg to differ... I have yet to meet someone who has not loved Army of Darkness, or Bruce Campbell for that matter!

I like this movie and went to the theater to see it. (Yes I have all Star Trek films on DVD, as well as the first three Star Wars films)

Other films I like that some people say stink:

Over The Edge-
Matt Dillions debut film. It was filmed in Colorado. Its admittedly a bit cheesy, the kids were unknowns-mostly locals cast in bit parts (only Matt Dillion and Vincent Spano became anything). It also has Lane Smith, Ellen Geer and Andy Romano as well. I could identify with some of the stuff dealt in the film. Mainly feeling ignored by parents, boredom and lack of things to do for kids my age in the area we lived in.

The Quiet Earth-
Filmed in New Zealand. Story seems a bit hokey- a government project goes awry and leaves a scientist who had worked on the project seemingly the only person left on Earth. Love the ending though with Zac standing the beach in awe of what he sees.
"The futures uncertain and the end is always near." Jim Morrison
"What the duece?" Stewie Griffin
"No one gets me, baby. I'm the wind" Tom Servo.
Well outside this forum I know very few people who love Army of Darkness, that is.

I'm with Joel - thumbs up to all the movies he mentioned. However, I still think Back to the Future was the best. Course, I was rocking and rolling to Chuck Berry in the 50's so there is a personal attachment to that era, for me.

Star Trek: Nemesis was dark, foreboding and dangerous as far as the producers making that kind of movie so far into the series. Still, I thought it was awesome, what with the special effects, the possibility of peace with the Romulans, and the death of Data.

Independence Day had a few questionable moments but was exciting and entertaining nonetheless. I especially like Judd Hirsch as Jeff Goldblum's father. His character was MOST delightful and key to solving the mystery of the alien's shielding.

Super Mario Brothers - I never understood why this movie didn't get better reviews. I liked it and thought it came off nicely with a good cast and some super moments.

Indiana Jones 4 - Yes, there were too many slow times during the movie and some of the action sequences were starving for action. Still, it was definitely better than 2 and entertaining enough to keep me hanging on the edge of my seat.

Godfather 3 - Is it possible to make a bad Godfather movie? No way!!! OK, so it wasn't up to par with the first, but I thought it was as good as the second. And, like Joel, I thought the closure at the end was most appropriate. Too, the entire opera house scene was phenomenal. Too bad Coppoala decided to use his daughter - bad mistake. Also, Diane Keaton's role early in the movie seemed a bit forced and overdone. But, by the middle, everyone was working in harmony and the movie was progressing nicely. Loved it!

Oh c'mon Jim, you rocked and rolled to ZZ Top Unplugged back in the mid 1880's too!

Mortal Kombat: Cheesy, cheesy action.
House of the Dead: I watched it three times.
Beverly Hills Cop 3: Was one of the only movies I owned on VHS as a kid.
Hard Rain: Another movie I owned on VHS.
