I've made it a rule NEVER to listen to Critics... Anyone can go and become a critic and later you might find out that they don't even like what it is they are reviewing, but it's a job so they do it...
So for all we know the person doing the Review for Adventure Gamers is a cousin of some suit who helped his cousin out by giving them a job...
From reading this review it sounds like to me like the person is a Hi-Tech Junkie and if games don't look as realistic as something like 300 or Beowulf or Disney's Christmas Carol then it is bad and depressing...
I think the artwork in Gray Matter looks beautiful... Granted I've only seen screen shots and trailers, but still... I think the Dread and Gothic look is what the story calls for, from what I've read of the storyline...
No, this review, like most of the comments made after it, will not keep me from getting and playing this game...

"Gray Matter's 2.5D graphics are beautiful, if disappointingly static. The muted color palette, gothic touches around Dread Hill House, and classical architecture of several authentic Oxford landmarks all support the story's dramatic tone. The backgrounds are detailed and interesting to explore—particularly the sprawling Timmons Park and the whimsical Daedalus Club—and each location contains a fair number of hotspots, providing many opportunities to hear Sam and David comment on their surroundings. Though the 3D character models are also fairly well done, especially the main characters, they don't really get to show off their full potential due to a lack of animation and close-ups."
Seemed he liked the graphics. Though I didnt read the whole review.

seems like everyone liked the story but the game failed short of everyone's expectations.
I played the demo & I found the background music a bit annoying, can't say I have ever played a game where the music had that effect on me.
Looks like its the budget that spoiled the game.

I think it was all the changing of hands that ended up effecting the game... One group of people would do X amount of work and then something would happen that pulled them off the game, but it was too much work to just start over so the next group had to pick up where they left off but wanted to put their own twists on it, and then rinse and repeat... That happen like 3 or 4 times, if not more...

Agreed, Bafitis. Given the checkered development history of Grey Matter, it seemed impossible to me that something wouldn't suffer. One irony is that in an interview Jane Jensen gave some years ago, when Grey Matter was still just something in her head, she lamented how much longer it had taken to develop Gabriel Knight 3 compared to the first game in the series. She clearly hoped not to repeat this overly prolonged process - but unfortunately she did.
