The Wall Correspondent (unsong ballad of the Night's Watch)

Finally got around to reading A Dance With Dragons, which has successfully restored me in a mood of Ice and Fire

As such, I was listening to Eric Boogle's ''The War Correspondent'' about Vietnam, and was stricken by how much it reminded me of the night watch and the wall. I tried to find a youtube link to the song, but for some reason it is nowhere to be found, unlike his other songs. It's free for legal download on many sites though, if anyone wants to compare!

And so, with a few modifications, I give you ''The Wall Correspondent''!

.....

Good evening, I'm Silver Tongue with news from Westeros
A stunning blow has been announced by the lord of Casterly Rock
At the battle of the Trident the good lords face defeat
While the pillaging in the Riverlands means dearer cuts of meat
And our dark ravens from Castle Black
Says three men of the Watch have died beyond the Wall.

The young man from the blacks sat in a Mole's Town bar
With the help of Dornish wine, he's pushed away the war
And questions with no answers that had rattled round his head
Had lost their urgent clarity and had faded round the edge
Though tomorrow they'd again be sharp and clear
Tonight they had been lost amongst the wenches and the beer

Ask a silly question, like why the hell you're here
Learning how to live with death, suffering and fear
For the Wall's a place for rangers, it's not for boys like you,
Is there something that you have to find,
Something you must prove?
Or are you hooked upon the adrenalin
That living on the Edge of the World brings?

But here you are at the Wall, you're a long way from home
Doing what you're pledged to do the best way that you can
Objectively you watch the war, never taking sides
And what you feel, what you really feel
Is hidden deep inside
For you're not being paid to moralise
And anyway, a man can lose his head if he joins by

And if you ever get back home you'll never be the same
The man that was before the Wall can never be again
And in ten years when you look back to wigh and count the cost
Perhaps you'll see the Wall gave you back more than you lost
And from it, if you learn nothing else
Perhaps you may get to know yourself
