Those aren't the Droids you're looking for

I've got a question for folks out there. I'm on Verizon and am thinking about upgrading my phone from a BlackBerry Storm to either a Droid Incredible or Droid X (when it comes out on July 15th).

Was wondering if you any of you could give me some reviews of the Android OS or any other Droid phones you've used. Do you like them? Should I make the switch?
Dont worry about Star Wars I was thinking about the Alcatraz droids.
Hey Dcat
I figured out how to upload that "oh boy mail" wave file to my Droid X. Now when I get new text messages or emails, I can hear Tex speaking.

Things to note:
1. Wallpaper resolution/dimensions are weird for the Droid. I tried using my picture of the Tex logo but the phone chops it off and won't let me center it. The phone wants wallpaper images that will stretch across it's 5 screens as you scroll left and right. (960x854 pixels)
2. Google Calender on the phone isn't fully functional. You can't put down biweekly events like paychecks or things that reoccur every few months like oil changes for example. You have to go to the Google Calender webpage, put those entries in there and then it will automatically transfer to your phone. I found it annoying you can't do it on the phone directly.
3. When trying to transfer files to your phone (mp3, jpgs, etc) the folder organization of the Droid is a little weird. When you plug into your computer using the usb cable it defaults to "PC Mode". It lets you look at the contents of the SD card as "Removable Storage". You also have the option to choose "USB Mass Storage". You see more files using "USB Mass Storage" versus "PC Mode". They choose strange names for the two categories.

For pictures, I made a Pictures folder under "Removable Storage/dcim".
For notification sound files, I copied my files to "Removable Storage/media/audio/notifications".
For mp3 songs I copied files to "Removable Storage/Music". Afterwards you can choose any of your mp3s to be usable as a ringtone.

But it all worked. I managed to change the wallpaper, notification sound, and use one of my mp3s for a ringtone for one person. So all those features work pretty much the same as on my Blackberry.

I think the only think I dislike so far is their wallpaper thing.

Oh man, I have to get that wave file.
A poster named Ray put this link up in the Support Section.

If that doesn't work for you, just give me your email address, and I'll send you the file.

How funny that you're talking about "ohboymail.wav". Since getting a smartphone a few years ago I've used that for my email notification sound. People at work know me by it, and my young kids repeat it when they hear it. I've thought about asking the board who else uses that sound. :)
You know it never occurred to me until recently when somebody mentioned using it for notification messages on their smartphone.

I have it in my Phone, I can send it in a Text Message if some one wants it... Or at least I'll give it a try anyway... PM me your number if you want me to try sending it...

I actually had a fairly long reply written yesterday to this thread, but for some reason my browser crashed and wiped the entire text before I could copy/paste it. That kinda leaves me biased whether or not I should try to recreate it all or just try to sum it all up in a shorter text :)

Anyway - what I meant to say was that I agree with Jerry Dan completely regarding the differences between iPhone and Android. And I should be able to know what I'm talking about as I own one of each:

1. Work phone is an HTC Legend running on Android 2.1
2. Personal phone is an Apple iPhone 3G running on iOS 3.0

I like the simplicity of the iPhone. It doesn't take much to be able to use the iPhone whereas the Android phone can be tweaked more and of course is more open than the very closed iPhone. The HTC Legend comes with the HTC Sense UI which is also very user-friendly AND it offers the opportunity to add widgets, shortcuts, folders and programs wherever I please on the 7 home screens available. On my main home screen I for example have a widget that tells the date/time/weather, I have a calendar widget with my next appointment and some apps I use regularly (messages, mail, internet and camera). If I were to do this on my iPhone, I would have to open 2 different apps (not simultaneously though) in order to get the required information. So in that sense it's much better on the Android.

The iPhone doesn't allow me to put an app in the bottom right corner if I want that - not unless all other spots on the same screen is filled already.

Now since I don't have the new iOS4 installed on my iPhone, I don't know what improvements there may be, but I do know that they now added the "Folders" option among other things. I'm just very hesitant to upgrade as Apple has proclaimed that iOS4 won't run that smoothly on older iPhones (older than iPhone 3GS) plus the multitasking bit will NOT be supported on my 3G. That sucks big time as I'm not about to go out and buy myself a new iPhone just yet. This one works perfectly so why should I buy a new one? I'm pretty sure that I will switch to Android when the iPhone "dies". Only questions are which one will it be and when will it happen :)

So to cut it all short (too late!!) ... Android will be my choice of OS even though there are advantages with both, of course :)

Actually, I've never used that one for mail, although I've had my computer set to play the "You have a fax" sound in my mailbox for email.

I'm really debating getting a Droid when my Verizon plan comes up for renewal and upgrading next month.

I never knew that sound was about - I LOVE it! I've just set it as my Mail sound and wish I had done years ago.

Ugh, Sam, I'm so jealous. I think I'm up for renewal of my Verizon contract later this year. I may join the Droid camp then.
Hey Dcat,

Here's a picture of the home screen of my Droid X. I put Tex as my wallpaper.

This picture was taken by my husband's Droid 2. Droid on Droid action.

On Coruscant, you have to pay 15 credits to see that.
