Curse Microsoft again!
Nice article. I wasn't around for that, 1983 was 2 years before I was born. Nice that the recovery sort of started the year I was born (1985)

Cub, i don't tend to go for top of the line though.
Even though my upgrade was a big overhaul, no piece cost me more than $450.
I was looking at the new graphics cards in PC Powerplay. The one i had my eyes on if i were gonna get a new one was estimated $330.
I think the good thing about today's market is you can get by just fine without spending exhuberant amounts of money. Sure the technology keeps improving faster than you want it to, but unless you "must" have the best, you're not going to go overboard.

Actually, the prices of AGP video cards have gone up dramatically in an effort to convince users to adopt the new PCI Express interface... so it is either completely update your system, or buy a more expensive AGP alternative. And considering that this will be the last generation of video cards to be released on AGP you will have to do it if you ever want to upgrade. Very sad.Vance wrote:1) PC components drop in price like crazy. Plus, anybody who pays that kind of prize when you can easily shave a third of the money off the top is going through life either totally blind or wilfully ignorant in support of another choice.
For example, a 6800 GT graphics card for AGP costs almost $200 more than a PCI Express version.
Of course the new Niche in processors are dual core options... but seeing as Intel has been unable to provide sufficient competition for AMD, the prices have not dropped.
AMD Athlon 64-bit processors are a nice price nowadays and you can pick them up pretty cheap and they will perform better than any Pentium 4 of equivalent or better speed in gaming.
I personally am a gadgets man and like the idea of having the latest and greatest technology at my disposal, and have no doubt voiced that opinion in this thread so I hope none of the above quoted comments were directed comments.
Doing what I do, I have needed to get used to high end hardware... especially now that the film industry is swaying into the high definition era, and I need to keep up. For example, you need a Dual Core or Dual processor alone just to be able to efficiently work with HD content, not to mention having at least 4GB of ram for Compositing and effects rendering. And the latest video card offerings from Nvidia include in built HD video content acceleration and enhancement features that further aid my loyalty to that particular option.
The way I see it... if I am going to spend $4000+ on a system anyway I might as well make sure I can play some decent games on it too. But that does not mean I don't know how to build smart. I built an AMD 64 3200+ system, with a 6600 GT and 1gb of Ram for a mate, brand new for only $850. This included 2X 80GB SATA HDDs.
Believe me when I say the PC will always be my favourite system for gaming, I love it as much as anyone lease here does... but the reality is PC is a pain in the butt when keeping up with games and costs you just as much, if not more than a new console every generation just to keep up. The Xbox has a 3-core CPU, and a next Gen 512mb video card... the cheapest you can get a Dual-Core CPU at the moment is $800. That's more than the Xbox 360 alone.
-Cub. =o)
No I did not... I was not really a fan of RPG's.
But I watched my brother play Morrowind quite a bit on the Xbox quite often and I loved the music and enjoyed that atmosphere... so when he told me about Oblivion I thought I would check it out, and now I think I might just need to play it indefinitely!

You'll go apey over Oblivion. I saw it in action at E3, and it's as good as the screenshots suggest. Lighting is wholesome goodness, they got the Source physics engine with real time foleys (chain goes *clink*clink*thud*clink* as you let it drop), and they've added in tons of little details to round out the game world.
I spoke to the project lead and suckered him into an interview "when the game is getting closer to release" complete with a meal from the cook they employ at their offices. I think it's time to take them up on that.
I'll shut up now.

Ah, but Alex isn't that cheating?
If Xboxes are souped up PCs why don't they release Amped and others on the PC as well? or would that defeat the object of investing in a games console?
And this thing about cheats in games - I know nearly every game has them nowadays, but how do they get in there? Who chooses what they are? It would be really interesting if there were cheats in the game that had some relevance to Tex Murphy. Just having to type in something like Tex or Lombard might make some gamers curious about the Tex Murphy series?
