Female Android Debuts in S. Korea

The road to hell is paved with good intentions. The road to heck is paved with sugarcoated forum-posts.

(( Inserts thermometer into thread ... tip explodes ... ))

Just remember everybody! Peace love and candy bars! Mostly candy bars... mmmm candy bars.

While we're all going out and being honest here, I have something to admit ...

((Raises hand sheepishly))

I knew that was the post to which was being referred to the whole time, I just didn't have the kahonies to say so. I figured it wasn't my place. However, I will also say I censored my own post because I had seen that the aforementioned post by Dr. Paul had upset Jen, and had upset her to the point of pulling her pic, and hailing from "Outta here" ... I noticed this, noticed what made her out of here, looked at my post which was 100 times more outright yucky than Dr. Paul's and decided ... "no, better not"...

However, there is one thing I may disagree with, that I've been hearing, and I'm going to politely say it ...

We here can be construed as a family, can we not? Over the year for me, and years for most the rest of you, we've become a tightknit community smart and intelligent people posting here, all for one common cause and that is our love of a computer game series, now extinct for almost ten years. That in and of itself is an amazing thing, simply because, as I read elsewhere long ago, this isn't a bunch of "OMG, LOL, dat is kewl" posts. To me this community is unique with the different personalities and their different localities. We're all around the world here folks. There is more intelligence here than possibly most government systems ...

Now, this leads me to my point .. (yeah, I know you're like ... get there already)

All family's have problems. I would like to think that there is such a thing as a non dysfunctional family with perfect harmony all the time, and gum drops falling from the air, but it doesn't happen. Or if it does, I'm sure the heck not aware of it. I believe this is what is happening here. It's going to happen. People are going to upset other people, but there is something we can do about it. Yes, you can cry havoc, and let loose your first amendment rights, OR you could respect the fact that some of your fellow family members would be upset by, or possibly caused emotional harm by some of the words you type, and not say those things. It's the only polite thing I would do for a cousin of mine. Or a sister. Or a brother. And this, more than any other posting message board ever, is more like that kind of community than any other message board I have ever been on. Ever.

This is why I would choose to censor myself. I use the word censor though, and it isn't even the proper word. It's more like ... "refrain from speaking vulgarity in front of a family member" ...

I mean honestly, I think a good rule of thumb is "Would you tell your grandmother that?"

Just my two cents, and whether you spend them or throw them in a jar to rot, I love you all! Just remember that!

Jen,

Regarding my post you said,
I found that upsetting, denegrating, and inappropriate for the Tex Murphy message board.
You also said,
At this point...I'm guessing that most people have figured out that comments that objectify or denegrate women offend me. (whether it be in jest or dead seriousness) Ok. Yes.
Of course, everyone on this board is aware of your sensitivity regarding women. But if you read my post carefully (the one that offended you) I don't think you will find a single mention of a woman in it.

A man? Yes. A machine? Yes. A woman? No. Not even close, unless you regard a woman as nothing more than a machine programmed to please a man. I don't. I doubt you do either. If anything, my post was objectifying or denegrating toward men.

Personally, I think the post was completely appropriate for a thread entitled "Female Android Debuts in S. Korea". Does the topic not indeed beg the questions: What is a female android? What are its characteristics? What is its purpose, its capabilities? Indeed, what makes it female?

IMHO, this would be an fascinating topic to discuss if everyone weren't so afraid to discuss it.

At the risk of offending someone, it occurs to me that there has been considerable misunderstanding about the content of my original post and I will attempt to resolve this. It is no one's fault but my own because, as I've mentioned before, my writing is terrible.

The 'scene' I was trying to describe, had no sex, no naked bodies, and no x-rated behavior whatsoever. But I can see how, reading what I wrote, it might imply otherwise. Sorry about that. It's my poor writing skills.

If you are easily offended, read no further. But if you are interested in what I was *really* trying to say, read on.

The fembot I was referring to sort of reminded me of the AFC circuit in an FM radio. In the old days, FM radios had an FM/AFC switch that stood for Automatic Frequency Control. It would sense slight drifts in the oscillator frequency and would constantly adjust to keep the tuner locked on.

In my dream, the fembot and I were sitting near each other, not necessarily touching. The fembot always had her eyes locked on my eyes and she would use various gestures, actions, movements, sounds, etc. to keep my gaze focused wherever she wanted. It was almost like I was in a hypnotic state and she was in total control.

For instance, she would move her hand, and the movement would catch my attention. She would see that I was watching her hand and would gently set her hand slowly on her thigh while my eyes would obediently follow. If my gaze started to wander, she would move her hand again, perhaps slowly stroking it along her thigh. As her hand moved, I would notice the sound of her perfectly manicured fingernails as they dragged along her nylons. Again, my eyes were always fixated wherever she directed them. Then she might shift her legs slightly, and the sound of her nylon clad legs rubbing against each other would again grab my attention. She would sense this and perhaps readjust her legs, crossing them the other way perhaps while making sure the sound of her legs rubbing against each other was loud and clear. And in evey movement she made, I could feel her eyes, fixed on mine, ensuring that I didn't move my gaze from where she was directing it. I was completely under her power or spell or whatever you call it, because of her strict lock my reactions and her continuous adjustments that kept my gaze a prisoner.

My dream never got beyond this sort of thing, but she held my attention for a long time and it was an extremely erotic experience while still maintaining a PG-13 rating.

The fact that she was a robot came into play because of her ability to remain entirely focused and undistracted while instantly responding to my slightest drift of attention - just like that FM/AFC circuit could respond to subtle frequency drifts. So perfect, so mechanical, yet so incredibly effective. It was only a dream, but it was an amazing experience and someting that, perhaps, only a robot/fembot could do.

So that's my true story of a fembot encounter. I hope it was not offensive. I'm not a writer of fiction. I had this dream and I thought it was entirely relevant to the subject of this thread.
I think it sounds like a great dream, from either a male or female perspective, and I gave no reason to believe that it should offend anyone. Unless you' re lucky enough to experience a lucid dream every time you sleep, and have complete control over this dream with your conscient mind, I'm sure you'll know by now that mysterious things happen in your dreams over which you gave no control. If someone is offended by someone else's dream, or description of a dream, maybe he/she should possibly try to find out why he/she is offended, and maybe even attempt to see things from the dreamster's point of view. Dr.Paul, I do not think you're a poor writer, just possibly a misunderstood one. If you're touching on a 'sensitive' and possibly 'provocative' subject, and it is not your intention to offend, try to make this clear. And everyone else, life is easier to swallow if you don't dwell on the contents...and this post is not meant to be offensive :o

I notice you use the term 'fembot', most recently being famous from the Austin Powers movie franchise. Can we drop this topic already? I mean, seriously, we all know we're mostly adult people around this board, but c'mon, some common decency. If you're offended by a post, don't read further. If you think your post may offend someone more than it will amuse and/or inform, don't post it. It's not what we're here for. There is freedom of speech, yes, but how about some freedom of opinion and common sense too?

To (mis-)quote mr. Pink - This sh*t is beneath us, let's move on.

I mean... we ARE mostly adult, aren't we?

Hey Fred,

I'm not sure what you're saying here. When you say "Can we drop this topic already?" are you refering to the topic of offensive posts or the topic of androids? Or both?

You made a double post JTOG.

I can't beleive this thread is still going on.
With security droids in both UAKM and Overseer, the topic of androids is natural for Tex Murphy fans. The issue of androids with gender is a fascinating extention of that topic and also have a reasonable tie-in with the Tex Murphy games.

For example, at the end of The Pandora Directive, Chelsea gets a Holodate with an artificial Rhet Butler. Tex gets a Holodate with a simulated Jane Mansfield. Although their dates are referred to as holograms, they are clearly much more than that. If I remember correctly, Chelsea walks off with Rhet, arm-in-arm as if Chelsea can fell Rhet and Rhet can take her arm. I think he even gives her a flower or something, or notices the scent of her perfume. Rhet's presence seems to be more physical than just a holographic image. In what way is he (or Jane) not an android?

Whatever they are, they are artificial humans with very definite gender.

So I ask, what are your thoughts about androids with gender? What purposes might gender serve for an android? How differently do we relate to gendered verses genderless androids? Do we even notice the gender if the android is male (R2D2 and 3CPO for example)?
I apologize. I meant the 'offensive posts'-thing, yes.
