RIP Tex Murphy

Hey all.

You all know I have been an avid fan of Tex Murphy for years now, and this is hard for me to say but I'll say it... In my mind I don't think we are going to get another Tex Murphy game. It's nearly been 10 years since Overseer, and if another game was to be announced tomorrow, it would take atleast another year or two for them to produce, meaning 12 years since Overseer. Sure we may get the conclusion to Tex one day in novel format or audio format, but in my mind I've lost the faith for a new game, I'm sorry to say.

sad news indeed, i'm one of the fans who really want to believe it will one day happen, but i sincerely doubt it, especially since the cast and crew are probably well into their 50's.

On the other hand, Tex Murphy could be the Indiana Jones of the gaming world where after a trillogy of epics is a 20 year (or so) hiatus and will return for one last adventure. If we were to only see 1 last adventure, that's what i'd like to see. A story that both puts Tex into retirement AND continues Overseer. Make it kind of like a flashback thing where tex is telling the events of Polarity as a retired detective while the player experiences it for the first time.

It's sad also, Chris, to see you of all people say there's no hope. I remember you once being full of beans and hope, you're one of the biggest fans here. Perhaps Tex is a coming of age afterall.

I still think there's something we can do, it's our mission, as a thanks to Tex.
At some point we've all had a doubt or two. (Except maybe Jim :D ) But since Aaron made his promise to bring Tex to light at least one more time, I haven't a troubling thought about it since. While the two of them are still kicking around, there's hope.

VIVA LA TEX!

PS Joel I think your Indiana Jones example is spot on. :D

PPS Unless this is some sick and sad little April fools joke Mr. Chris M

Passion doesn't just happen... You make it grow...
So break out the mental fertilizer!
Well, you know...while Tex wasn't the first fictional PI to lead me down my career path, he was the second one. When I first played UAKM, I could be found playing either Edward Carnby or Tex on the playground at recess. I owe a lot of thanks to those two for their stimulating my curiosity so early on in my life.

I too hope that I can see another Tex story; and I'm eager to see the Overseer cliffhanger and story resolved in one form or another. Still, my life will not be completely destroyed if I don't ever know. My real life has a lot of important and interesting things that keep me busy most days.

Yes indeed, if there is another Tex game, I will be one of the first to get it. If the story comes out in book form, I will be one of the first to get the book. It doesn't matter. Either way, I'm content; and I'm content with the friends I have made on this board over the years. That has to count for something too.
Well, on the one hand, Tex may be the Indiana Jones of the gaming industry but is rapidly aging into being the Rolling Stones of the industry too. On the one hand, still brilliant and going strong, but at the end of it all, how much more is there left?
Me this Mr Marsland is up to one of those April Fool's doosies.

Similar to one old Matt Buckstein did about 5 years ago, and he got us all!

Ahhhh fair enough, April fools to all of you...BUT HANG ON!!! April fools in Australia was yesterday and you're both Australian, aren't you about 12 hours late?
Actually, it's no April Fools joke. Seriously... I meant it all sorry to say :(

Well... you have to consider one thing:

Why lose faith after so long? I mean, it is not as if it is harder now than it was 8 years ago to hope for a new Tex... so why not just keep your hopes alive. You have nothing to lose really.

There are two endings to this story:

a) There is a new Tex game and the community rejoices and continues to thrive!
b) There is no new Tex game, but you still have the community who will be your friends for eternity and will be here, Tex game or not.

I think both sound just fine to me. Don't you?

One of the greatest things that came out of Tex Murphy was this community it created (with special thanks to James)... and that will never die.

A very sound and logical response there. I was chatting to James on MSN today and our discussion went quite closely along these lines. I made it my duty to thank him for his commitment to this community and never letting it die, because without it, yes, Tex would truly be ancient PC gaming history to anyone, including us.

I believe there is a project out there somewhere for Tex. In fact, I would go as far as saying that there definitely is a possibility for a Tex Murphy game. However, as with many things, there are conditions. Compromises to the production would need to be made. Firstly, those hoping for an updated version of the UKAM/PD/Overseer interface will be bitterly disappointed, it's dated and I think it's a fair call to say that no gaming studio will go for it (unless Access magically rise from their grave).

What are these compromises? Well, it would have to be a hybrid genre which basically means, to have just an adventure game most likely wouldn't be acceptable, especially if there is no FMV. It would have to be an adventure game that combines action and adventure but still staying faithful to the roots. So, the suggestion is? One thing I don't want is a contemporary Indiana Jones style Tex Murphy where the engine is just a bread and butter replica of Tomb Raider. That would be aweful. I've always had a suggestion for Tex since it's remission after Overseer and I still stand by it today, stay with me here, read my whole suggestion:

Build the game on an FPS engine. No, don't make it into a Quake/Doom/Half Life clone. Use the FPS interface and control system for the purposes of character. By using a FPS engine like Crytech or even Doom 3, it automatically meets contemporary standards in gaming. Obviously, the first thing we remove are guns and the kill kill kill aproach. Instead, the player walks around FPS and interacts with characters and objects in the environment. Think of it as Half Life 2 without the gun and hostile characters. Then include the ability to drive vehicles so you can travel to different locations. Finally, include the occassional action scene, in this instance, the FPS engine would be great. Imagine the roof top fight from PD on a FPS engine where you need to use your wits to attack and evade but without the far-fetched nonsense of AK47's and rocket launchers. It can work and it should!
I dont think there needs to be compromises when we have Conspiracies games being cranked out left and right but we'd need an update from AC to accurately assess things.
The Conspiracies games? Aren't they the Greek Interactive Movies overdubbed by American actors? I have the first game, that's the one which involves time travel. To be honest, I couldn't stand that game. The FMV was generally poorly shot, acted and directed. The in game environments were dull, the puzzles were unoriginal and derivative of Tex Murphy and finally, in one of the scenes you can see the boom mic!

I'd love to see another FMV Tex as much as anyone else, but it would have to be to the standard of perfection that is a part of the AC/CJ signature. This would be heavily influenced by the type of funding they get for the game.
Conspiracies 2 will be coming out soon and again it was shot with live actors.

Hmmm, ok, i'll give them one more chance since it's predecessor was the first title. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt for now that the major flaws in the first title have been resolved and will result in a much tighter gaming experience.
What would be interesting is if they were to sign on a big budget film company (like Warner Bros or Sony) that invest huge amounts into digital entertainment (games and movies). Pitch the idea as a Film but state that its still a game. (The Matrix boys actually did this! they pitched a comic book idea to WB and wanted it as a game.. but it became a movie instead.)

The film company would pay for the Film side of the project. The development would be paid for by a game's publisher (though I'm guessing Sony or WB have both) that way we'd get the same result.

See tex is 1/2 Game 1/2 Movie, if you did them seperately it could actually be more feasible. The rights are now back in ACs hands (assuming the information is accurate) AC can finnish writing the story and pitch the idea.

Engine wise, you could probably use an FPS engine. So long as you modified it like System Shock/Deus Ex so that it became a hybrid of FPS and Adventure Game.

I think Outsourcing to other firms may be a good option. And if it flops.. hey at least they tried. It's better than sending Tex to the big PI in the sky.
