Anyone any tips for who will win?

My mind isn't quite what it used to be, sooooo, what the H was that all about?

Yep - in a little over a month it's time again for us Europeans to watch how badly countries will do in the annual song contest. My hope is just that Denmark will make it through the semi final so we get to perform twice at the event, but I must say that I don't think we will get through to the final. I mean - come on! Why send a drag queen to the Eurovision?

There were some posts a few months ago about different countries eurovision entries. The UK was the last to select their entry and those are the lyrics to ours.

It's all a night of silliness really, some awful singing, awful costumes but really entertaining nonetheless.

I saw the alternative entries. There was one I felt was best which was by Cyndi:

It got down to Cyndi and the above entry by Scooch but Scooch won out. Apparently though there was a weird moment where the announcers got mixed up and people thought Cyndi had won. Oh well.

The Scooch entry above is fun and all, but pretty corny. I think it just goes to show that there's this pre-determined view about the Eurovision that it must be silly/corny. Even one of the judges for the UK entries was constantly saying "not corny enough" to some of the entries although the other judge there felt that hopefully this year could change that (they admitted to liking the Scooch entry though, it cant be denied that its a laugh). The UK entries for this year was really surprising because quite a few big names were in the running, usually its bands/artists that have never been heard much before, I suppose because Eurovision is seen as a bit of a joke so most well-known artists seem to steer clear. But this time there were quite a few famous artists... sadly most were a little dissapointing and not very 'stand out'. I was looking forward to seeing what the ex-lead singer for The Darkness was going to offer but it just didnt seem to work out.

I really think that the Eurovision should get a makeovoer and become more about showing the best of what country can offer rather than the best packaged cheese they can offer. I guess either can be entertaining in its own way but I really would love to sit down and get a taster of the best of the best. In other words it would be nice if we had a song contest that was actually taken seriously, I'd love there to be an international song contest. After all we have olympics and other international competitions that show the best of what each country can do. Why not for songs? It would be really cool to sit down and hear the very best from Russia, Japan, UK, Europe, America and everywhere else and see how they fair against each other. I love hearing songs sung in different languages.

Denmark's version looks far better than the UKs - yep it was a little weird when Terry Wogan announced the wrong winner - apparently he might lose being able to host the event for the uk.

That would be a shame as he always speaks his mind about songs when they're on and he says what he really thinks of the other countires' presenters - quite funny when he's saying on national telly what you're really thinking as well.

Some things I could never really understand about this contest. This is supossed to be a singing contest of different music typical for the different countries.
So why does almost everyone sing in English nowadays?
And why is Israel participating? (This is nothing against Israel, but this country is hardly European.)

Demonlawyer: Did you even hear or see our song for the Eurovision? I was pretty much in shock when they announced him as the winner and I must say that I have 2 different opinions about it.

1. The negative view
It would be so cool to see him bum out so badly that he doesn't even get through from the semifinal. That way the Danish televoters can see how wrong they were when they voted for him to win the national contest + it would be a clear sign that drag queens aren't the way to go in this competition

2. The positive view
Of course seeing as how it's my home country, I would like to see him get as high a position as possible in order for us to start in the final next year, so we won't have to go through the dreadful semifinal.

Anyway - Terry Wogan does crack me up sometimes, but he can also be a bit rough at times. I clearly remember when the contest was hosted by Denmark after our win in Stockholm in 2000, he took a glimpse of our hosts when they entered the stage, and immediately got the nicknames "Dr. Death and the Toothfairy"


Wintermute: You're absolutely right. It IS supposed to be a singing contest which should reflect on the different countries different types of musical interests, but nowadays we could easily call it Eurovision Show Contest seeing as how it's basically the best show / performance that will win on the day and not the song itself.
I think it's alright to sing in English seeing as how Ireland, UK and Malta really had their advantages back in the days when they could sing in English and neither of the other countries could. Just look at how many times Ireland won in the 90's. So the contest has been leveled out a bit leaving room for surprise winners rather than the same countries all over again
But you're right. Why Israel is participating is beyond me, and now that Azerbaijan is participating as well? Or Georgia? I dunno ... I guess they think about the countries that can participate in the European Soccer Championships and then let them be able to participate in the Eurovision as well, but I don't get it to be honest

Well the main (and I think only) reason I watch Eurovision is to hear different languages being sung, I think its interesting to hear the songs in their native language. Although you can't understand the lyrics I feel that the voice and the sounds of the words become like an instrument. I guess its almost like an instrumental then. I regularly listen to Japanese music and other foreign stuff (recently been checking out Russian pop/rock).
But at the end of the day, I think the majority dont share my view regarding the sounds of the words and want to understand what the song is saying rather than it be like an instrumental piece. So it seems that alot of countries now are steadily singing in English instead to appeal to more voters, since aside from Chinese (but this is Eurovision so its only European voters) and whatever else, it seems to be the most commonly spoken/learnt.
