I just can't believe this

That terrible tragedy in the states with the shooting, but the article I read said this as well...

The Federal Bureau of Investigation reported last month that more than 1.4 million murders, rapes, robberies and assaults were committed around the United States last year, or a violent crime every 22 seconds.

The number of victims of violent crime in the United States last year was the equivalent of the entire population of European Union member Estonia or the African state of Gabon falling victim to murder, rape, robbery or assault.

But then again I have no idea how many people live in Gabon - not very many??
DL, you said that the population of US citizens that were victims of violent crimes last year (1.4 million people) was equivalent to the population of Estonia or Gabon.

In short, Estonia & Gabon each have approximately 1.4 million citizens.

I hope that clarifies things.

Brilliant deduction, Hammerhead! :D You sarcastic little...

Of course, this is not to say that the US statistics aren't awful. Modern culture has made its bed, and it's lying in it, to our detriment. But then again, I wonder if there's ever been a free society that has done much better, apart from punitive measures decidedly more strict than we see in the US. I reject the notion that we cannot have stricter enforcement of law and more consequential punishment without encroachment on freedom.
So what will you believe?
We Cheat The Other Guy And Pass The Savings On To You.
To some I am sure this means we should have either more gun laws or no guns at all.

Personally I think this speaks more to our culture and lack of moral strength of our nation as a whole. The further we slide moraly the deeper the problems become.

Very intesting article
Interesting article. But, I think there are far more factors in play than just gun control. I hesitate to put the crime rates down solely to the gun laws on the books in either country. Certainly they may be a factor, but I think there are many other factors as well (e.g., population density, unemployment rate, etc.). I am certainly no expert and don't pretend to be one. Nonetheless, it was a very interesting article.
Guns aren't the problem, fingers are the problem. I say outlaw fingers now before we all kill each other.

No, it's not the fingers, or the guns! It's ... the air! If we couldn't breathe air, then we wouldn't be able to live, hence we wouldn't be able to wield a gun, hence nobody would die!

So just get rid of all the air! Perfect ...

Wait a second ...
I'm not fat ... I'm festively plump.
Personally, I mourn the death of common sense in our society.

Fred, you definitely aren't the only one. I'm sure every generation goes through this; where we look at the younger generation and feel a deep sense of dread. "Where is this world going, and how can I get off it before it crashes?"

I think we are on to something here Malloy. Do I smell a presidential run?

j carnby....your new avatar is fantastic! A very flattering shot. :D

You've got something on your chin though. (reaches over to wipe it off)
kidding, love ya!
Good point Hammerhead! Can't believe how dim I was being.

Jerry Dan - very interesting article. I think it's all relative - there are some places here like Brixton and Moss Side in Manchester where the police just don't go, but then again I know they're rough places so try to avoid them. But saying that anyone who goes looking for trouble will find it.

*Smiles* Thanks Jen. That was actually taken last Valentine's Day. Albuquerque got a ton of snow that day, and classes at UNM here were canceled, so instead my friends and I trudged around campus in the snow snapping photos. I just grabbed that one, changed it to B&W and decided I liked it. :D
