Deus Ex - still good!

In the spirit of old gaming while playing through Pandora, I decided to dust off my Deus Ex box and give the CD another whirl. It's still a great game. Sure, the graphics are dated now, but that (along with the timeless gameplay) is what makes it so classic.

It's so fantastic, I've got all of the hardware maxed out, 1024X768 resolution, all textures on High, all at 32 bit, runs smooth. I'm going through it slowly again and basically playing it just to become more immersed in the story which this time involves reading everything I come accross including newspapers, computer terminals, info cubes, the works. I'm also doing ALL of the sub-missions to which has lead to interesting encounters with characters such as Smuggler.

Still a great game, once I finish this, i'll get stuck into Deus Ex 2.
I always loved Dues Ex. It's my kind of gaming, in every aspect imaginable. It takes the first person shooter I love, combines it with adventure gaming, and a few RPG conventions. The end result is a game that takes my favorite genre's, melds them into a cohesive whole, that doesn't suck.

I played part two on the Xbox when it was on sale for five bucks, and I found it to be just as great. A little dark for my tastes, but the ability to approach a situation from any vantage point, and solve problems in more ways than one, depending on your bio mods, made up for it. I believe Dues Ex 2 is also the first game where I accidentally shot a kid in a fire fight, and really, really got upset. The kid didn't die, just knocked unconcious, but it's the first game I ever actually ... did something like that, and had it really affect me emotionally.

Curious, gameplay wise, how does the console version of Deus Ex compare to the PC version? Have they cut and modified a lot of the gameplay and story or does it still remain the same?

Sorry to hear about your distressing experience by the way.
The console version is crap, Please wait for DX:R to be ported to UT3.. then you can play a PROPER version of Deus Ex on the Playstation 3 console :D
Well it wasn't distressing more than it was surprising. Games, for the most part, have never depicted violence against children. When my bullet strayed and stuck the little girl in the mosque, she yelped, hit the ground, and I was surprised. If I remember correctly, my exact words were "Oh good lord jesus, what did I do." ... Not even in Grand Theft Auto, was there a reaction like that. It's not bad for me. I like a game that can really grab at your emotions. On the negative side, however, that also means that particularly sadistic gamers could have not so accidentally shot her. Sooo ... I don't know how to react to that kind of inclusion in a game, really.

As it relates to differences between the PC version of Dues Ex and the PC, I couldn't really tell you. I played the original Dues Ex on the Playstation for the first time, and Dues Ex 2 was on the Xbox. I never even knew they were computer games first to be honest. I always was a console man first (the sole exception being the 96 to 97 era of PC gaming), and a PC man second. Although that is a good question, because it makes me wonder if the PC versions were different enough in playability or gameplay options to warrant a second play through for both games. I know I read somewhere in a magazine about a mod for the original Dues Ex that added more textures, and made the game for graphically pleasing. If you haven't picked that up, I might look it up in my stack of game informers for you, or someone on here might know what I'm talking about.

But I'm interested in knowing the difference in the PC and console versions myself, so anybody with the knowledge about it, feel free to jump in and illuminate us! ;-)

Hey cyber, since the console version is crap (and it's the only one I know), then it, barring me dropping 600 on a PS3 ... or 500 or whatever, you think the PC version is better? I think I might just have to get my hands on it.

I can't imagine it getting much better than the PC version. In fact, I think Deus Ex on any console would be cumbersome because of all the augment, skills, weapon and movement controls that would need to be incorporated to a small game pad rather than the multiple configuration possibilities of a key board.

I can imagine the console version over-simplifying the sophistication of the PC version and perhaps dumbing it down a little. That's one of the arguments against Invisible War when compared to the original.

Cyberpunk, Deus Ex: R? I assume you're referring to the third title that is currently in development?
Ugh where on earth have you all been. Deus Ex: Reborn, they are porting the PC version of the game to UT2004 and beyond, UT3 has been announced that it will support mods for multiplatform, meaning Deus Ex will run on a PS3 eventually. (and possibly other consoles too).

The PS2 version was inferior for the following reasons:

1. They removed the starting and ending scenes and replaced them with FMVs that weren't as good (for more info type Mr_Cyberpunk into YouTube :D).
2. They dumbed down the interface.
3. They dumbed down the levels (which ruined the PS2 version in my opinion as it made the levels faster and much more boring).

However!

the PS2 has some improvements

1. The character models are much better (though Deus Ex : HDTP has made this redundant as we made MUCH better quality models for the PC version)
2. The sound effects are much better (Deus Ex: Reborn is apparently working on this)
3. The ability to sway your gun was the coolest ability and I have requested it for DX:R because it was cool being able to kill an entire room without moving the screen :D.
