Can Pandora even be topped?

Even if they had the money for a full blown Tex game could they even make it bettter Pandora? With a Chelsee victory, puzzle boxes, awesome puzzles, Roswell and the Fireball chamber seems kind of hard to do in my opinion. But I'd like to see them do something daring and kill off one of the Chandler Avenue Regulars. Well they already did that with Hamm.

I think they could. Whatever ideas they have been having for this next game have been stewing around for quite a while. I think whenever they get the opportunity to do another game, they are going to make sure that all the pieces fit together just right. I know they wont blow their shot when they get it.

Pandora was the quintessential computer game. The purest of both form and essence.
I hate to say "can't" (Can it be topped?), but...maybe it can be equaled.

I have to agree 100% with this. To this day Pandora is one of the best, if not the best, games that I have ever played.

It would truly make my year if I ever get the chance to play another Tex game as good as PD.

Equal to will be good enough for me. As a matter of fact, could we expect anything less after all these years?

In an ideal situation where budget wasn't a problem, then I'd imagine the answer would be yes. The trouble is getting the budget. A publisher would be required to provide some sort of financing under the assumption that the game would make profit. This is the trouble; adventure games aren't quite as popular as they used to be. It seems that the only way to turn a profit is to make the adventure game cheap.

So, let's take a look at adventure games they still make these days.

First there's the cheap stuff. Syberia. Nancy Drew. Any of them ones based on Agatha Christie novels. Runaway. The ones that come out for twenty bucks a pop. Mostly point and click, 2d backgrounds with 3d characters, 2d backgrounds with 2d characters. These turn profit due to low development costs, they're all on the PC, and they get no marketing. So...no money to spend there.

Then there's the adventure games that are based off of established franchises. Like...CSI. Or Law and Order. Most of these are made in the same style as the cheap stuff, but then there's the new Lost game coming out. That game had a budget, but it also has a very large, established audience.

On that note, Tex had a large, established audience, and is now at cult status. Anyway, I continue.

Finally there are the adventure games that merge genres. Games that come to mind include Indigo Prophecy. The Tomb Raider series. Just think of any game that has extensive puzzles, but also has something else. Usually shooting. Action. Platforming, that sort of thing. Something to sell the game. Why buy a game of puzzles when you can go online and play Sudoku for free?

So, here's my prediction. The only way for Tex to live again is in either cheap or blended forms. So, to truly answer your question...

If Tex comes in a low cost, point and click adventure game, it will not trump The Pandora Directive.

That leaves genre blending. High concept. How do you sell it? What do you add in? What do you take out? Tex can be back, Tex can be better than he was before, but it won't be quite like he was before.

I'd rather have no Tex at all than blending. The new TR games are horrible.

I like the newer Tomb Raider games like Legend and Anniversary than any previous incarnation. I used to like those too but they are archaic and needed change. At least the new ones are faithful to the original material and in my opinion are greater yet still respectful of the past.
