Unofficial Tex Murphy

Hey everyone, I thought I might write and inform you that I finally have my MAC Book Pro. It's a nice piece of equipment, very compact, durable and quiet.

The specs:

- 2.6 Core Duo
- 4 gig of RAM
- 512mb video
- 15 inch screen
- DVD burner
- And I added in a wireless keyboard and mouse set from Logitech, very nice.

I also got 3 games with it: Doom 3, Quake 4 and Prey. All of which run quite well with high detail and anti-aliasing.

Thrown in, also MAC book care AND Microsoft Office 2008 (student edition).

So excited!

I guess you wont be eating for a while Joel. Hah, very nice system.

Nice specs mate. Now you should have the chicks just lining up to get a piece of your new found trendyness! ...becuase Mac users are so much cooler and younger than PC users. lol

Nah seriously, it's a good system. Boot camp it, and you will be hard pressed finding a difference.

Welcome to the group Joel! Mac User here You won't regret buying a mac, they are excellent machines that require very little maintenance unlike Windows based PCs. The operating systems are exceptional.

Be aware that the reason why the price for the mac was so high is because they make their money off the hardware mostly, ultimately you save more money on Software (aka Leopard) which is a pretty good tradeoff when you consider MacOS = $100AU were as Vista is like around $300-$600 and thats not even the full featured version.

to make matters even better you can play Tex Murphy on macOS natively using DosBox.

I've been thinking, i'm about to get wireless Internet, but should I bother buying an anti-virus package before doing this or doesn't it really need it? I've noticed that there is only 1 anti-virus product for MAC, Norton.

There are a bucket load of 3rd party ones too, and they are mostly free. Norton is good, but is a bit bloated. I used to use it a lot, but after using Avast! (which I think supports Mac too, and is free) it's so much lighten on system resources and does as good a job. Check if AVG, NOD32 or Kaspersky are supported on Mac too, as there are also great apps.

Even with PCs you have to be careful not to get or install all of Norton's Side Dishes so to speak... They usually end up causing more harm than good depending on what all you are doing with the computer...

I don't think you guys come anywhere close to the machine I got running in the garage...

Mega Low Time on Minesweeper

That's right...you're jealous.

What do you consider Mega Low Time on Minesweeper??? I use to do the 99 Maze in under 2 minutes, game time that is less than 120... Don't remember the exact score, just know that it was under 2 minutes... I remember the 10 Maze though, that I could do in 6 seconds... Pretty sure at one point I did it at 5, but it wasn't on my computer so I didn't see the time on a daily basis...

nah....there no such thing as being old...just experienced. )

and my record low on the smaller maze on minesweeper is 4 seconds....on the middle maze its like 26 seconds..and on the bigger maze..the 99 bomb maze...I think my record is like 110 seconds....

You don't need a firewall or AV on a mac. Firewall is taken care of by your router (plus Leopard has one inbuilt too unlike tiger)

Anti-Virus as I said aren't needed since its very rare you'll ever get a virus.. thats not to say however that they don't exist - to be on the safe side you can run one but from experience I've found you probably won't encounter a virus unless you are using programs built by the wrong kind of people (aka CRACKS - Mac programs don't like them and for that matter aren't needed when everything on a Mac is business OEM available - so just find those instead its safer. Cracks are useless.. alternatively you could just buy the stuff, but Photoshop is like $2000 and is probably the main reason why you'd get a mac.. Recommended software now they just need to make it subscription based.. then I might legally acquire it.)

Problem is, even with Photoshop (or the whole CS3 suite for that matter) I don't see one valid reason to get a Mac over a PC, performance wise that is. Heck, they look better, I totally dig that motivation, and Virus wise: well let's face it, you are right Cyberpunk; if you are careful anyone can avoid issues... that goes for both Mac and PC. Don't get me wrong, I don't care who uses what machine, I am not going to insult anyone for what platform they use. But that does not stop me asking questions when a Mac user tries to tell me that they chose Mac becuase of something like "better performance". I just don't get it.

But of course, if your reason is "I like 'Mac only' software (Final Cut... and um.... iMovie... *cough*) better" than that's cool, or if you are like "they look better and suit my bedroom decor", once again I am totally cool with that. But help me out with anything else.

No really...I see the benefit of both systems from different angles. I do like the layout of the OS on the Mac and the simplicity for internet, email, and word processing. Still, my PC is faster than my Mac (I have a high-end Power PC G3 Imac) and I do still play games every now and then. Being raised with PC, I'm just more used to it; but I do like both.
