Cubase... now running at 16Ghz!

Well, kinda...

I managed to sucessfully overclock my CPU to run at a nice 4Ghz today. In theory this gives me 4Ghz x4 (being a quad core), but realistically it cannot be considered 16ghz... but it sounds good anyway, lol!

Rather excited about that... I am still using the stock Intel cooling solution, which is rather good on its own I might add. But with some small modifications later down the track I should be able to reach 4.8Ghz across all cores no problems... but for the moment, I am happy with the 1Ghz increase (from 3Ghz which is was originally).

Just thought I would share my joy.

That's pretty nuts. Overclocking scares me, as I have pretty poor cooling. I am happy with the way they came :)

At my age, overclocking is out of the question. BTW, what was the question?

I got a new barebones computer just a few weeks ago (one of the reasons I bought it was to finally be able to play UAKM on DOSBOX), and it's an AMD Athlon 62 x2 6400. I was thinking to myself, "It's so fast!" But now you've reminded me that it's not very fast at all.

You're too funny sometimes...

Sounds like a very nice set up you got there Cub... I'm planning on building a Monster of a machine after my Disney trip this coming fall... This computer is going to be strictly for gaming...

Yes the 16GHZ sounds very Nice... It will be nicer to hear when you come back and say 20GHZ once you bump up the cooling system... :D

Seriously, nice going Cub... I'm thinking of coming to you or Nilo, maybe both when it's time to build my Gaming Machine...
You guys are out there when it comes to the Technologies...

Nice one Cub. Grats on the speedy pc. I wish I had that kinda machine.
I am just happy that mine doesn't explode. Its occassionally been making some scary ringing and buzzing noises, I think its going radioactive on me.
I plan to either replace some parts in it or just get a new one. Its about 4 years old by now at least and as my work involves computers its seen a fair amount of abuse...

Ringing and buzzing noises... Could be your CPU Fan or Power Supply Fan finally dying on you... How often does it make those noises???

You said it was 4 years old??? Yeah if you can afford to, it's time to replace... In computer Years, your computer is about 80 or so... Kind of like dog years, but with computers for every year we age, they age about 20 years... In some cases computers will age as much as 40 years in a single year... It's not an exact science... lol

My PC occasionally makes the odd whine as it's warming up (as well as the graphics card fan sounding like a lawnmower when it goes to full speed, really need to get that sorted).

The weird noise though is that 13 hours after I turn the PC on, I invariably get what can only be described as a "bip bleeechk wk" sound from the motherboard speaker - that's happened on at least 2 of my past motherboards as well as this one. Anyone experienced this?

Oh, and if I leave it on for another 13 hours, it does it again.

If the wining noise is constant, it is probably one of your cooling fans about to kick the bucket. But if the whining noise happens when you perform certain tasks on the computer, it is most likely your PSU (Power Supply) that's on the fritz, as certain tasks demand more wattage, and because PSU's output less power as they get on in years, they whine when they are being stressed too hard. This will eventually cause it to die, and it may or may not take everything else with it.

Marinedalek, I would at first say it is an overheating countermeasure from your motherboard, but seeing as it repeats itself every 13 hours or so, it sound too uniform to be an average overheating issue. It may have something to do with a particular task you have scheduled in Windows; i.e. you may have told it to do an update every 12 hours in some software which is causing it to access information from your HDD causing a whining noise. At least, that's all I can think of based on the info you have given to me. If you are certain the interval within instances is consistent, then it makes your issue significantly more interesting.

Thanks guys for the replies. I really appreciate it. :)

Yeah I have a friend who has built computers in the past and they guessed it might be either the Power Supply or the fan... and assured me it won't blow up in my face (but that it might suddenly fail if its not just the fan).

It doesn't happen constantly and doesn't even happen every day. Just every now and again suddenly it makes this ringing noise and freaks me out! Probably trying to surprise me. It seems kind of random. Like I'll be doing image editing and browsing the net and so on and it'll be fine. Then randomnly when I'm just browsing the net and got a few smaller programs open it'll go off on one. It might be a process in the background kicking in (although I don't notice any slowing down or anything in the programs I'm using when it happens) or just an accumulation over a period of use during a day.
I should probably do a few more scans etc. too. Already done spyware etc. but haven't done a full virus scan in a while (always takes so long and slows my pc up). I obviously have background security running. But I use Norton which is a resource hog... need to figure out changing to a better alternative.

Thanks for the suggestions and reccommendations. Yeah I may be best just going the full hog and getting a new pc. This pc saw me through Uni I think, so probably about 4 years or more based on that assumption, and of course Uni was a busy time for my pc as I was on a multimedia course! I'm hoping my friend can find me a good deal by building one and getting the parts themself (as I am seriously broke at the moment lol... and can't afford too much expense, but a pc is important for work). I don't know much about hardware or what parts would be 'good' so gonna have to leave most of it to them. I'm open to suggestions from anyone though. ;)

Thanks again.

The crazy bleepy thing (it's definitely from the PC speaker btw - doesn't happen if there isn't one connected) happens in DOS, Linux, Windows etc.

I doubt it's heat-related because the temperature of the room my PC's in varies hugely over the course of the year yet the noise always happens once my PC's been on 13 hours. If I were to turn on my PC at 9am tomorrow I could guarantee it would make the noise at around 10pm. The same if I turn on my PC at 9pm - it would make the noise at 10am.

It's not unique to this one build either - my current system was built from scratch around a year and a half ago, yet the system before it did exactly the same thing. One constant however is that the processors have always been AMD... actually I think the BIOSes have been the same brand also.
Maybe it is some sort of refresher the hardware is hardwired to do to itself if it's been on for a long period of time... Just a though... Other than that I can't really think of anything else... If it does it like clock work, it has to something it is set up to do...

Sorry Marine, sounds like an odd one to me. Wish I could pop on over and check it out, and poke around in your BIOS for anything. Perhaps you have some special energy consumption features that came with your motherboard?

Download a piece of software called Prime95: http://files.extremeoverclocking.com/file.php?f=103) ... it's a stress test for you computer, and pushes the CPU and Memory to full load for a long period of time and constantly reports the performance. Run it for about 30 minutes, and then post a screenshot here and I will see if there is anything wrong.

If it is working fine, it should look something like this:

Image

(ignore the CPUz part, as it nicked this image from another site, and you don't need it).

If after we do this test and we find out it is not effecting your performance or causing errors, the simplest solution: unplug the PC speaker! :D

On a side note, my Prime95 showed errors on my 4Ghz setup... foudn out that my memory is rated at 2.1v and my Motherboard is only pushing 1.8v into the suckers! No wonder the memory kept pooping out every now and again. I will attempt to increase the voltages to the memory, and subsequently the Northbridge to see if I can bring everything up to par with the increased 400Mhz Front side bus... for those of you who have an idea of what I am going on about. For the moment, I have had to drop back to 3.6ghz for the time being.
This thread has made me realize how absolutely stupid I am when it comes to computers. Thanks guys.
