Wow. The name just came to me after 3 weeks just as I was typing out the post. The game I was trying to remember was "Gadget: Invention, Travel & Adventure" - it was set in a surreal steampunk world where you had to track down a group of scientists attempting to save the world from a comet collision.
According to a quick scan of review sites it's appalling, but my young mind just found it disturbing more than anything
