Pirates, vampires, zombies, ninjas, ghouls, aliens, goblins, monsters, robots, sorcerers, undead, werewolves, demons, mutated dinosaur-cyborgs and those pesky phone salesmen! The shotgun is a one-size-fits-all solution!
Just a wild guess, but the fact that no one who watches it is able to make it past the 3:00 mark without his/her brains liquefying might just be a factor.
