Making a TV pilot for $0 is Harder Than it Seems

Alright so as far as I know NO ONE attempts to make a television pilot for absolutely no money. The good thing is that we own all of our own gear so it REALLY saves on the cost of things. Not to mention we bought a custom 35mm lens for our cameras to emulate that look of film. Now we have variety to our productions. I had to let my producer friend in on what I was doing before she flew off to New York to meet with Disney (she doing better than me, SO jealous) this week but she seemed to think I had a good idea for a show. So that gives me hope. Right now I am relying on friends and volunteers for the pilot. Still in the writing phase and it's hard to showcase the best of what you can do crammed into one half hour show. ORIGINALLY we had intended to do a season's worth of webisodes and attempt to sell them to a network but things have really accelerated since a few friends got jobs in a few key positions. I can't pass up the opportunity to do this, it's something so simple that someone could take the idea from me so I have to act now.

I can't really get into specifics about the show but I can say it's about video games so I thought I'd share here. Plus I haven't really said anything interesting in a while so I thought what the hell. Plus it might gimme an energy boost to get it out there as soon as possible if I have people asking about it.

The only down side (but not really) is that I might have to move to Vancouver if the show is picked up. That would literally mean me leaving with a backpack of stuff, finding a place and then bringing all my other stuff at a later time. No clue how much it'd cost to bring a cube van across the country. Canada is pretty big the last time I checked. Anyway that's what is eating up my time as of late. I'll try and keep everyone posted when I have things to report on.

Vancouver is only a few hours from Seattle!! BTW, it's beautiful in BC. And there's a thriving TV/Movie industry.

Sounds like a good move.
Can't wait to hear more!

This thread leaves me intrigued and unsatisfied :P

Best of luck to whatever the heck it is you are attempting to do!

I have faith in you Stu! Can't wait to see what becomes of this!

I am attempting to make it for the video game network G4 but it's the Canadian G4 (which is why I have a chance, they're crying for programming) However if the show gets picked up there is a chance it could be ported to other networks. Most likely G4 in the States and potentially others. Kind of like that show Electric Playground (or EP now.) I don't know if anyone has heard of, or even seen that show but I know it goes to many countries. So IF the show gets picked up it might only air in Canada but most likely they will port it to other networks that need an half hour to fill. IF it only airs up here I will try to get it online somehow so everyone can check it out. I'm not promising the best entertainment in the world but it should be interesting at the very least. You guys can be my greatest critics and help me out by telling me what's wrong with it.

I've seen it when browsing through the Guide looking for something to watch, but I've never turned it on before... Maybe now I'll give it a chance...

I must clarify, my show is not like Electric Playground. I just meant that the distribution would be similar. EP isn't too bad, I personally think it used to be better in the past but at least it's daily now as opposed to weekly. I have a couple friends who work on the show so I get a kick out of watching it and seeing them on it.
Are you going to be on the Show you are in the process of making??? Or are you all behind the Scenes???

What kind of a show will it be? I'm not talking specifics, just... Will it be a reality show? Gameshow? Will it be a story, y'know... with story arcs, characters, actors, things like that? Or is it a news show?

What've you been up to? :D

I unfortunately will be the face of the show as my producer tells me. (I'm not a big fan of my hosting but working on it) but I have managed to minimalize my segments on the show. Instead of me being all over the place like I originally intended (was gonna be a web show on my YouTube page) I will have my own niche in the show. The main hosting and whatnot will go to the people I am employing for that specific reason. The only reason they are forcing me to be on it is that I am pretty much doing everything on the show. Writing, shooting, editing, yadda yadda, the list is large. Because they frown on this in TV land they want me to be involved in the show itself (just for my passion of gaming and the show.) So my ugly mug will be on TV somewhere if it gets picked up.

As for the show it is a magazine show format. Basically it's all of those things you mentioned if I so feel. Depends on the subjects of that particular episode. Every episode will be unlike the others. To a degree anyway, there will be similarities regardless. Not only will I be hosting but I will also be Executive Producer in that I can guide where the show is going and all that fun stuff. They only want to give me so many paychecks so I have had to accept the position and defer duties to others. It's hard to let go of the reigns like that but having said all that I am glad I won't be the only sucker doing all the work. However I am not at that point yet so it's all me and a couple friends shooting the pilot. We're just trying to make it good right now before we start shooting. We have to kind of show our best so we can illustrate what we're capable of and where the show is going. It's hard considering no other episode will be like this one. I am sure when I have something to show you guys all of this will make sense.
I must admit here that this is not my dream show by any means. It originally started as a way to have fun and get some practice with everything while I was building my business, hence the web show. Once business started getting slow it occurred to me I could just jump the gun and get a paycheck during the downtime. Seeing as I graduated in Television I figured that I might as well put the piece of paper use and call in some favours from the contacts I've accumulated. The way I see it this is a way to get my foot in the door to all the places I want to be. Namely Movies, TV and Video Games. Vancouver is a fantastic spot for all of those things so this is most definitely a step in the right direction.

With that I must still state that the show isn't my passion, but it is fun to do and I believe it will show through in the final product. It's been my experience that as long as people enjoy the job they do the work reflects it. I foresee the show running until it becomes a burden rather than fun. I would like to have it that I could eventually leave the show and it live on in some way but I have a feeling if I leave, the show will leave with me so I just have to make it's run as enjoyable as possible while we have it. Does all that make sense?
I get it. Like Penny Arcade?
