I'm fine... Live in Warrnambool, Victoria.... It's terrible though with all lives and homes lost by the bushfires...

The fires were traveling at over 100 km/h. It's no wonder people never had a chance to escape in their cars. As for the residents, some of the survivors said they started to see smoke in the distance, went inside for a minute to grab some things and by the time they came outside again the fire was on their doorstep.

Scary stuff.

Hi everyone, really sorry for the belated reply. Thanks for the concern - I am fine At the moment i'm at my Holiday House in Lorne (a Victorian Coastal town) with my immediate family. I must say that the reports i've seen on the news are most destressing and have moved me more than anything i've ever seen on television. As a result, I have made a few donations for the cause only to wish there was more I could do.

I'm also increadibly moved by the response from around the world regarding this. Good to know Chris is doing well.

Anyway, I'm lucky to have access to the internet at the moment as the resort I am staying in is having a conference down here for some sort of cancer research and they've set up a temporary internet lounge in the resort. I'm using my 007 skills by posing as a member of this team - so my time is extremely limited. I'll be out of action for the next week, i've been down here for nearly two weeks. Family, surf, sand, DVDs and frozen yoghurt has been the lifestyle for me with much more to come! So i'll check in with you all soon.

I hope that you're all well and sorry that I kept you in suspense for all this time. If I had access earlier I would have logged on.

I'm starting to know how Tex felt when he was in the foyer of the Law and Order Building when the security guard was getting suspicious as i'm getting a few mysterious eyes from around the room noticing that I may not be the scientist I profess to be (pun intended). Good to hear from you Joel... I've been hearing reports for the past few nights straight now, they just keep sounding worse and worse...

Hopefully some rain or something comes along to help thwart the flames... It's really sad to hear that some of this was Arson, I hope they catch all involved and string 'em up...


Speaking punishments, what kind of penalties are there down under for breaking the law??? I love topics of the law, always interesting to hear how the other societies around the world enforce theirs...

Bafitis, in terms of Australian Law, we abolished Captial Punishment (death sentences) a while ago (1970s). So the culprits involved are likely to get Life Imprisonment sentences depending on their level of involvement and depending on the level of damage that each culprit is responsible for. I have no idea how they can make a firm case against an arsonist without a witness though. It's not the type of crime that leaves fingerprints or footprints, so it's beyond me. I just hope they catch the buggers.

I wouldn't expect Capitol Punishment for Arson, Life sounds nice though...
Here in the States we had a bad case of Arson in Pennsylvania, they just caught One guy who was involved, they aren't sure if there are others yet... They are able to pin at least 17 {26 or more fires in total} of the fires on him along with the death of an 80something year old woman... I hope he rolls over on the rest of 'em if there are more involved...

I wish we could get rid of capitol punishment here. Not right to allow such judgment to come from man.

I agree to a point... I'm not a bible buff, but I believe in the Eye for Eye type of punishment... If you rob someone, all of your possessions should be taken away... If kill someone, you should die in the same manner in which your victim did...
Of course there is room for error with a system such as this, but the system we have now isn't exactly flawless...

Hey, you could always force the thieves, rapists and murderers to enroll and Take the Black. Of course, we don't exactly have a giant Wall to guard...
