Hey I was watching a rerun of TNG last night and was watching Redemption Part Two.
In this episode the Romulans are trying to cross the border into Klingon territory without being detected. Usually this would be no problem with their cloaking devices.
However Picard developed this plan to have a bunch of ships get together and send tachyon beams in between the ships to make this kind of web. Any ship passing through this web would be detectable even with a cloaking device.
The Romulans counter by finding the weakest ship in the web at the edge and disabling it so it can't send out the tachyon beam.
My question is why would this plan have ever worked? Space has 360 degrees of freedom. If the Romulans could identify the boundary edge of the web, why not go around the edge? There was no need to pass through the web.
Now in the pilot TNG episode Q, created a web like structure. He had infinite powers he could make it infinite and trap the ship so that made sense.
