I just saw some comedian on the comedy network, and this guy was talking about Australian beer.

Is it true that it is 15%??????

Man, and I thought our beer was good at 5%..
of course, I guess it would seem so when you only basis of comparison is American beer at 3%.

The comedian compared that to just being over Robitussin =P

Is Beer really 3% in the US. I've always seen 5. Though I don't really look often as I don't drink often. But 15 is...significant.

A beer's alcohol content depends upon the beer. According to beerinfo.com, the highest alcohol content is Samuel Adam Utopias at 25%! Here's the link that lists the top ten:

The only Australian beer I know is Foster's (typical provincial American me). That's 5.1%

Most popular American beers are between 4.0 and 5.5. Which reminds me of a joke (doesn't everything?):

The presidents of Budweiser, Miller, and Guiness went to dinner after a conference. The waiter asked "What would you like to drink, gentlemen?" The president of Budweiser said "I'll have a Budweiser." The president of Miller said "I'll have a Miller." The president of Guiness said "I'll have a Perrier. The popular beers in Michigan are not that high.

Well it all depends if you are drinking national beers or local beers... I know that there is Beer in Montana that you can't buy anywhere else, and some of them are 8% if memory serves...
I brought back a few cases one time and threw a party, everyone kept wanting to know where the beer came from... Also they couldn't figure out why they were feeling tipsy when they had only half the amount they normally do... Trout Slayer is among one of my favorites... It's a cross between an Ale and regular Beer... Not quite as thick as Ale, but definitely thicker than Beer, goes down really smooth...

But no, most Aussie beers are not 15%. There are indeed some beers with a content between 10-15% but mostly our beers sit between 5-10%. Anything less than 5% here is considered on the liter side, and most of the time we don't drink Fosters. My personal fav's are Bernard Dark (Czech), Beez Neez (Aus) and Heineken, which all sit around 5%. Some of the more popular Aussie beers here in Aus that Aussies actually drink are ones made by: VB, Tooheys, Coopers, Carlton, Blue Tongue and James Squire. The Queenslanders drink XXXX (said as 'Four-Ex'), but the rest of the country unanimously believes it tastes like rat piss, haha.

Americans: Drink weak, pissy-tasting beer.

Brits: Drink warm, beery-tasting piss.
Aussies: Drink anything with alcohol in it.

Norwegians drink mead. And use fly agaric for snacks.

Hahaha, this is one of my favs about Aussies and beer:

Three Aussie guys were working on a high-rise building project - Steve, Bruce and Kevin.

Steve falls off and is killed instantly.

As the ambulance takes the body away, Bruce says, "Someone should go and tell his wife."

Kevin says, "OK, I'm pretty good at that sensitive stuff, I'll do it."

Two hours later, he comes back carrying a case of Beer.

Bruce says, "Where did you get that, Kev?"

"Steve's wife gave it to me,"

Bruce replies. "That's unbelievable, you told the lady her husband was dead and she gave you the beer?"

"Well not exactly," Kevin said. "When she answered the door, I said to her, 'You must be Steve's widow'.

She said, 'No, I'm not a widow.'

And I said, 'I'll bet you a case of Beer you are'."

Really shows how Beer is our real national economy.

if you spiked the beer with a bottle of burbon then yeah it would be 15%, probably more LOL.. I rarely drink beer, more of a burbon man myself. Course I probably got that from Tex, the introducer of Burbon to me lol (this is what happens when you're raised on DOS games).

Most beers in this state are around 5-7%- though this is coming from Adelaide (two main brands are Coopers and West End- if I had to pick one, I'd go with Coopers, West End is considered rather Bogan.), home of the lesser Pint.. so yeah, our standard drink is like half of the rest of the countries. You'd be looking at 10-12 for anything outside of adelaide.

Beer comes in a range of alcohol content. I brew beer and make them with a variety of alcohol content. In the U.S. in some states there is a limit to the alcohol content in beer. But, that limit is pretty high. Georgia just changed its laws a few years back and now allows pretty high alcohol content beer. I'm not sure exactly what the limit is in Georgia, but it is in the teens, at least.

Most beers are somewhere around the 5-10% ABV range. When you get into high-gravity beers, the alcohol content can get into the teens and twenties. However, as the alcohol content in a beer gets higher, it gets more difficult to increase it. So, it is rare to have extremely high alcohol content beers.

I want to switch gears for just a moment. Anyone use vanilla extract when baking? Check the alcohol content on the lable. Some are as high as 38%. So, forget the beer, just go out and buy a large bottle of vanilla extract and make a night of it.

BTW, Watkinsonline.com sells a vanilla extract that has the smallest alcohol content of all their cousins (8.25%).
