'Adult' Tex Murphy
Jerry Dan mentioned the idea that this Tex should be more 'adult'. Some have balked, but I for one would welcome it. Though, I would argue it got pretty adult already.
Now, my definition of "Adult' is probably different than others, some take adult to mean things like Mortal Kombat, Carmageddon and GTA, if this is the case, then no, I most definitely do not wish to see a more 'adult Tex' game.
However, take a look at a game like Heavy Rain, that is the type of adult tone I would welcome. Don't get me wrong, I like the slapsticky elements of Tex and would be disappointed if there was none. However, I would love the game to be 'darker' in parts. Something the Tex games have yet to make me do is cry. I would love to see the ante upped to the point that I felt more emotions than just fear (Running from the security eyes) affection (for all the characters) and a bit of suspense/curiosity.
When I messed up and lost Ellis, that would have been a perfect time to make me feel bad, and it did, but it certainly could have pressed buttons differently to make me breakdown at such a loss. (Though I'm not sure Ellis would have been the one to pull off a really emotional moment)
Just a though brought on by Jerry Dan's comment/question, what do the rest of you think?

To be clear, I heartily welcome "gritty". What I don't welcome is anything approaching gratuitous smut.

Agreed and that's what I figured you meant, which is why I mentioned Heavy Rain as my example, there is plenty of grit in that game. Any darkness or small traces of "sex/nudity" is in there for the story, or done emotionally and not for a cheap thril, IE only in service of the gamel.Jerry Dan wrote:To be clear, I heartily welcome "gritty". I like the tone of Pandora best. For the new game, this is the tone I would like to have.
From an emotional standpoint, to build that connection, the character just needs to be developed sufficiently, I don't think the tone needs changing.
I actually choked up quite a bit in the Boulevard of Broken Dreams scene where Tex gets his letter from Chelsee.
As an example of something without a gritty "adult" tone that got me emotional at times would be Buffy. Like I said, I think it's more about character development than tone.

Chris with clothes on is all the adult you need! Bow-chicka-wow-wow!
Seriously though, what is "adult"? think it's a mistake to think that "Adult = dark." That's a cynical way of seeing the world, and it is a fallacy. What movie made my cry more than any other in my whole life? Made me cry so hard I almost couldn't stop? Toy Story 3.
As Richard Curtis put it:
Back to Tex, though, I think there are some parts of the games which were needlessly un-sexy, and to the point that it actually hurt the scenes.
Neither Regan nor Sylvia were sexy enough for them to make sense as evil temptresses. I'm a woman so I can't judge, but that's what it felt like to me. And it is a part of the plot then-- both of them use their supposed sexy charisma to lower Tex's constitution, but I just don't see how. It's not credible. So I can't be as invested as I ought to be.
Also, I'm totally not turned on by 20-30s-era style and Art Deco. That's just me.

I hated most of his films, especially Love Actually, and yet, I totally understand what he's saying.Richard Curti wrote:If you write a story about a soldier going AWOL and kidnapping a pregnant woman and finally shooting her in the head, it's called searingly realistic, even though it's never happened in the history of mankind. Whereas if you write about two people falling in love, which happens about a million times a day all over the world, for some reason or another, you're accused of writing something unrealistic and sentimental.

The best way I could possibly put it would be with an Indiana Jones comparison. Namely, Lost Ark vs Last Crusade.
Crusade has more production value, and is probably an overall better movie. Lost Ark has more grit to it, and a borderline amateurish feel which Spielberg has completely lost over the years.
I miss this grit. I miss this vibe of raw adventure and subtle humor.
This is all the ''adult'' feel I would like to see. I think the line is somewhere between UAKM and Pandora, although closer to Pandora.

I doubt "smut" will happen at all, but I agree with you Locke about the adult nature of Tex. So many of the fans were young when the games 1st came out, and we've grown now.
Should Tex pull harder at the heart strings? It's a mixed reaction from me. But you know, I'm confident that as Aaron and Chris have got older, have had more emotional life events, and have grown as individuals, their maturity will spill over into how the story is told in the new project.

Normally adult rated games have explicit sexual content, but I don't think that's what Jerry Dan means. It's really funny, but I think a game can have the most graphic violence, but it will still get a mature rating.
So as far as what rating to target. You should look at your target audience. Do you want to target people who are already familiar with Tex and the people who Big Finish are accountable to on Kickstarter or target a newer generation?
If I'm not mistaken this game doesn't have a publisher to answer to and only potential distributors at most. I could even see an intensity option working as Tex aims to give people a customizable experience. As for my personal preference, I feel we're a lot older now and should get the most intense Tex game ever made. However that could just mean a notch up from the strongest game. I do have some reservations about content getting into little kids.

The most "Smut" I think we'll see will be Nilo and his undershirt and collection of Playbub magazine...
Just because we've gotten older doesn't mean the style of Tex needs to get older... Remember, now that we're adults we still love to play the games, otherwise we wouldn't be here... Also we have older members who were already adults when the game came out and they still play it and are hoping for another...
There is No Reason whatsoever to take away a portion of perspective players... That being younger teenagers and even preteens... Possibly even younger... I know there are a few people here who played the games when they were under 10...
So why would you want to take this part of the audience of Tex away??? It sounds like you are trying to be selfish and make the game in your own vision... If you want to do that, go make your own game and put whatever you want in it and target it to whoever you want to target it to...
From my gathering of the way their games have been, they seem to like to target as many people as possible, young and old... There's no reason for them to change now...
I'd very happy with a game that is a cross between UAKM and PD... Put the scent of dark danger in the air like in Pandora, while using the quick witted quips and hearty humor from UAKM...
I like the Family-Friendly atmosphere that Tex Murphy has and I wouldn't want to see that changed at all... I'm sorry to disagree with you, but that's my thoughts on it...
As for the sexual nature of Regan and Sylvia, it was all in the acting... I must say that it wasn't Tanya's best performance... And Rebecca just wasn't/isn't all that experienced...

I wouldn't call any of the TM games family friendly. That's not to say they're strictly adult, but they do attract a mature rating for their content. If a film were to be based on Tex, i'd expect it to be PG-13. Again, not strictly adult but I wouldn't say it's entirely family friendly because of some of the themes, violence and darker tone that PD and overseer seems to have.
On the other hand, having stated all of the above, what really would constitute a more "adult" Murphy? I agree that a lot of the slapstick or one-line humour can sometimes wear thin, but it is in good proportion (UKAM excepted). It did strike me as strange at times for Murphy to have the good nature that he does for a "down and out" PI. If I were to go more adult, maybe just have some more complexity in the decision making, a slightly grittier story that involves some harder decisions but nothing that takes away from what makes Tex who he is. In short, there's no need to turn him into Max Payne but i'm all for a more cynical Sam Spade type character.

Bafitis I don't know who that was directed to. The simple fact is that Big Finish is accountable to the people who are backing this game and not preteens who don't have access to credit cards. Whether that means the majority of the first group wants a family game or a mature game is pure speculation. But I don't consider myself selfish for wanting the creators to side with what the backers want instead of young teenagers, because going the direction of the $ would bring in more funding.
Regardless I don't think any pre-teenagers should be playing any of the last 5 Tex games. If I had kids it's not something I'd want them playing. The games have murders, violence, and sexual content. So if you ask me Tex was never a family game and has never targeted younger people.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion... Murder/Death is all over the news and has been in kids' movies/cartoons for years... The murders/killings/deaths in Tex Murphy have never been even close to gruesome...
As for the sexual content, I don't see where any of it has been that racy... If you get on some downtown buses, you can see more there than you ever have in a Tex Murphy game...
I started playing Tex when I was 14, I've seen some people post here that said they were even younger when they started... I started with Martian Memorandum... Took my another 2 years before I was able to find a copy of Mean Streets... Things were as easy to find back than as they are nowadays... Didn't have the internet to purchase and download or ebay to go and buy a copy...
They show shows like George Lopez, Home Improvement, Friends, and That 70's Show on Nickelodeon... Those shows have Episodes that are far more racy than any scene I've come across in Tex... Their language is worse than anything I've heard in Tex as well...
If you don't think Teenagers or younger are seeing dark and sensual stuff, you should take a day and watch children channels a bit, you just might be surprised what you see... It ain't all Tom and Jerry or Bugs Bunny anymore... Again, these are Children Channels, if a parents wants to block that stuff out they might as well unplug the TV entirely...
I could probably go out to a middle school and find you a 14 year old that could sit down and give you an intellectual conversation about Zombies... Now I think we can agree that the Zombie Movies {and new show} are done in a relatively Adult manner...
Trust me, unless they try to film Tex in a Skin-A-Max fashion, they aren't going to push the threshold of a young teen...
Big Finish's obligations aren't strictly to the Backers on Kickstarter... If that's what you think then their target audience is extremely small and there's little point to doing this at all... Their Obligation is to bring Tex to a New Level and to bring in NEW players to make Tex so popular that a 7th game will be considered... As of now we've got 3,700 backers... We might end up with 5,000 by the end, maybe 5,500... If those are the only people that Big Finish is targeting they might as well close up shop now and not even bother with the trouble... Because none of those people are going to pay for the game when they've already been given it as a Reward for donating to the creation of it... So if the backers are the only customers Big Finish needs to care about, then they aren't going to make any money they are just going to break even...
I'm a backer on Kickstarter, so does that mean they should make 2 separate games??? One "Adult" Tex for you and a milder one for me???
Teenagers are the ones that get their parents to spend money on video games... Because lets face it, the population of adults that have time for video games isn't exploding at the seams... I haven't played a Video Game in about 5 years now... Why, because I simply don't have the time... I have a job, I have a child, I have other family, I have a house, I have pets, I have an active social life, and I have personal projects that have to get done, among other things that come up in life...
I'll make time for video games I feel are worth it... Such as Tex... Once this game comes out next year {provided they have few technical difficulties} or early 2014, I plan on taking Vacation time just to play it...
My list of games that I would like to play is quite long, but Tex would certainly out rate any of them...
I fail to see what is wrong with keeping Tex the way we all fell in love with it all to begin with... Why change it??? If you want a different game and a different structure then go play a different game... I thought we were all here because we wanted another Tex game, and now you're all sitting here debating on how to change it... If you change it, it isn't going to be another Tex game... Sure it will be Tex Murphy and it will be continuing his story, but it won't be a Tex game like everyone is use to...
Discussions have gone on here before, what if they did Tex this way or that way and others would chime in, no Tex needs to be done in FMV with puzzles and this and that... And now you want to change Tex's personality by making him darker and whatnot??? How will it be a Tex game with a different Tex???
I for one would hate the game if it ended up with a Tex like the Boulevard of Broken Dreams, all Dark and Self Centered...
Tex stands for what's good even if he has to lose in the end, at least he did it for the right reasons... His witty jabs wouldn't be the same if he were a darker person...
You're trying to change what makes Tex, Tex... And I just disagree...
But I'll shut up now and leave my 2 cents at the door...
