On day 6 of Overseer and compy keeps crashing.
First: very cool site; like it a lot.
Followed every tip I could find on this site (and others) and have been able to overcome every hurdle thus far but now as the subject relates, I can't go any further in the game
...long story short (too late) if anyone has any save games from Day 6 just after Tex injects himself with the nanites, I'd appreciate it.
I'd like to solve the technological problem(s) but I've tried everything I've read here and other stuff out of desperation and nothing seems to work.
For those interested, I'm on a
Gateway 7330Gz laptop
P4 3.06GHz w/ 480MB
Yes it uses hyperthreading but I've disabled it at the BIOS level specifically to try to fix the problem but still no game for me.
I have also disabled the MIDI and tried numerous sound configurations as other posts have suggested but still crashes at the same spot regardless.
and I've installed the 1.04 patch.
Everything runs fine; video, sound, everything (DVD version btw) but consistent crashing when a video sequence is followed by an overdub audio file followed by a revert to a VR room one was previously in. (That's as specific as I can be to the problem; did my share of beta testing) So specific to my problem, I see the video of Tex injecting himself with the nanites, next I hear what's-her-pickle say "You injected yourself with that thing blah-blah-blah?!?" and the game freezes immediately as it displays the text "Returning to Greg Call's Lab (NEXUS)"
I have been able to play up until day 6 by using my own method of advancing through the game.
At a trouble spot where video and sound sequences would crash, I would ctrl Esc or Alt Tab in and out of the program during the playing of the sequence and...well usually the game would crash....but....when I reran it the game would have somehow autosaved past the trouble point and I could continue on in the game. I've tried it at this point (Day 6 nanites) in the game now probably a hundred times and it ain't gonna work this time. (The syringe keeps popping back into my inventory showing that I'm all set for another crash.)
So again, if anyone has any save games from Day 6 just after Tex injects himself with the nanites, I'd appreciate it.

If you're using Hardware Rendering, that could be the reason why. I had the same problem every time there was a small movie during a VR sequence. I used Software Rendering to get around most (if not all, I don't remember how I got past all of them) of these problems, but Software Rendering isn't perfect, either. I just run it in Software mode all the time now. You can change it in the Preferences tab under Config in the main game.

Tex - "Was the picture of me flattering at least?"

Thanks Aaron! That worked.
I'll relate some of my other findings for the benefit of others who may be experiencing problems as well.
The software renderer was fine; I could move around with the keyboard OK; as soon as I clicked the right mouse-button to move around, I then got the mouse-trails that others described and then the whole thing froze (a couple times it froze XP completely). I'm not going to pursue it anymore (I just want to get back to the game) but I suspect it's my touchpad driver or something related that is involved in that one since it's not a regular mouse.
Thanks again Aaron.

Yeah, I only use the keyboard for movement (I hate using the mouse for movement in UAKM and PD, as it's imprecise enough to get me in trouble in the danger scenes...I can't count how many times I've gotten caught on that damned front counter in the mess hall of the Roswell complex while I'm running out of time to capture the alien hunting me down wow what a sentence this is). So thankfully, I haven't seen that downside, and, um, probably never will. But, I say, just move with the keys, man, works for me.
