Adventure Game Thread
Wow, thanks for all the suggestions guys! I was hoping to make up a 'to play' list from your guys' suggestions, but it already looks like that list is gonna be unrealistically long. In your guys' opinion, which of the games mentioned so far would fall in your top five, or top ten list (excluding the TM games and Phantasmagoria since I've already played those)?
Also, has anyone played Still Life? I picked it up at the game store here in town on sale for $9 and it looked pretty sweet, I just would like to know if it's worth playing before diving in

Well the Gabriel Knight games are uncomparably wonderful.
You can read more about the plots and receive other infos in the Gray matter thread-
With the depth and complexity of the storylines and the atmosphere the Gabriel Knight games still put most other games to shame. To me the GK and Tex Murphy games are the ones that stand above the rest.
Definately a Must have!!!
I played Still Life and I really liked it. First of all I think the gameplay was ok but not really too special but the atmosphere is great. The game takes place in 2 different timelines, in 3 out of six chapters you play the grandfather of the maincharacter Victoria -Gus Mac Pherson( who was the star of the prequel
Post mortem) . These chapters take place in the 1930´s ( or maybe late 20´s can´t remember that precisely) in Prague. Gus MacPherson a stranded P.I. is chasing a Jack the Ripper like serial killer. I liked the Victoria MacPherson chapters as well, but I was always a bit disappointed when I had to leave the GusMacPherson Storyline ( obviously there is a connection between Gus´ and Victorias cases). The prague chapters were one of the most atmospheric things in an adventure over the last couple of years.
By the way Still Life 2 has been announced for a late 2008 release. I´m definately going to buy that one as well, even though the release date seems a bit early perhaps and it might take a little longer.

Strictly speaking, Fallout 1 & 2 are not adventure games, but crpgs, or computer roleplaying games.
Also, Fallout 1 & 2 are the BEST DAMNED crpgs out there. To name a few others worthy of mention in the same paragraph as the FOs, I can rapidly name Planescape: Torment, Arcanum and Baldur's Gate (which turned into a series as well)
Falling completely off the path Fred-style, I'll also share that for some years ago, in a chat online I managed to get a few words with Tim Cain, one of the main men in Interplay's Black Isle Studios, responsible for some of the best by-god roleplaying games ever made for the pc. Awesome guy, he was really cool and down to earth. I remember I thanked him profusely for the games he'd made (Fallout 1 & 2 at the time was what I was referring to) and he just said "I'm glad I was able to entertain you."
Also, and if you've not played Fallout 2 and have huge plans of doing so in the near future - MAJOR SPOILER HERE
We had a talk about hos his vision of the Enclave in Fallout 2 was. In Fallout 2, there is a group called the Enclave, which is basically the remnants of the US Government, complete with a president, a vice president, secret service, the works. They planned to erase all mutant and mutated life on the planet, and then reinhabit the world with genetically 'pure' humans. They are of course stopped by the player character as the story progresses.
TC's vision of the Enclave was basically "F*CK Earth, we're leaving!"
I'm so, so sorry that they didn't get to do Fallout 3 - Van Buren, and that crappy Bethesda picked up the license so they could milk the cow with their crap wanna-be crpgs... I'm sure they'll get the atmosphere right, but that's the only thing they ever manage. The entire roleplaying deal will go right out the window and it'll be a click-fest.
Now, how in hell did I derail so badly? *Shakes head* Sorry about that.
Speaking of Adventure Games (Trying to get the train back on track here) Besides Grim Fandango, DOTT, and the Monkey Island games... I've gotta say, both Full Throttle and The Dig hold a very special place in my heart.
Full Throttle has one of the best stories and the best settings I've ever seen in an adventure game. And The Dig has a truly UNIQUE atmosphere. I love it to bits.
If The Dig was a boardmember here, it would be Jen, because it always makes you feel all warm and fuzzy whenever it appears.

Pirates, vampires, zombies, ninjas, ghouls, aliens, goblins, monsters, robots, sorcerers, undead, werewolves, demons, mutated dinosaur-cyborgs and those pesky phone salesmen! The shotgun is a one-size-fits-all solution!

I agree with you on most of those. Besides Tex, my top fav's were Full Throttle, Loom, Phantsmagoria, and GK 1 CD version. LucasArt's was the best gaming company for the longest time. Thier adventure games rocked and the X-Wing, Tie Fighter Sim? Forgettabout it. Too much time spent on those bad boys. Dracula Unleashed was simply a guilty pleasure.
Never heard of it... How old is, when did it come out???

Riddle of Master Lu was released in 1996.
I see there are some Lucas Arts fans here ( which includes myself)- Did any of you hear about the new game from the former Lucas member Bill Tiller- A vampyre story?
I think it just looks like a Lucas game and the atmosphere looks wonderful.
There is really something happening in the adventure world with games like Gray matter, A vampyre story or Hal Barwoods´ (Indiana Jones) Mata Hari ( which is released by DTP just like Gray matter) and there are other examples. It really seems that 2008 is finally gonna be a year of great adventure hits again. But back to A vamypre story ( Release date - at least- in Germany 31.5.08 ): Here are some screenshots, I immediately fell in love with this game after I saw them the first time.
Unfortunately some of the screenshots I wanted to use were too big , but on the official homepage ( http://www.vampyrestory-game.com/cms/news.htm ) you can have a look at some more beautiful screens in higher resolution. The publisher also put out a little trailer combined with a full cutscene . I may repeat myself but it looks wonderful

Coming Early 2008... You put 31.05.08... That's pretty much June... I wouldn't say that is Early 2008... lol
Seems like a decent looking game though...
Here is an older game, but still a Good One...
http://youtube.com/watch?v=FYbAWZ8yPks
It has Christopher Walken in it along with a few scenes with Burgess Meredith... Scott Cohen is pretty much the star though... That's who you play, a Reporter for the Paper... Got a few other Big names in it too...
You can check out the Movie Specs here...
http://imdb.com/title/tt0117483/
eBay has it for about 10 bucks plus shipping if anyone is interested...

Our site received the news from the A vampyre story Publisher in the middle of february, the official release date is May 31.st . It just seems that the official homepage is pretty out to date. It´s pretty much the same as with the Gray matter homepage. If you want news the last place to expect them is on the official homepage.
I own Ripper aswell, it´s been years that I played it but I´ll write a classic review about it on our page somewhen in the next months so I´ll play it again then.
I think Ripper really had some very strong and some really weak sides.
That limited 3d Movement was horrible, the controlling really frustrated me and I remember thinking ,why can´t it be a full freedom of movement type engine like in the Tex games-
Beside that I thought some of the riddles were really more than hard and there often was no sense in the solutions BUT... The storyline was really great, the actors were very good, the atmosphere was really good as well. Regarding these aspects i liked it.

A Vampyre Story!! I remember I saw the concept art years ago!! I'd completely forgotten about it because I thought some mook cancelled it!! How awesome is it that it's finally coming out?
I'm definately getting that too! Viva la revolución!
You know what would make me go dance naked in the streets? (Y'know, BESIDES a new fully-fledged Tex-game, I mean?)
LucasArts bringin' some boys back together (The Cleverness Division) to make a new Maniac Mansion game. If I got to see Dr. Fred and Purple Tentacle again I would seriously do a jig. On the rooftop. Of City Hall. Wearing my Green Tentacle costume.
Now all I need is a Green Tentacle costume. And a new Maniac Mansion-game.
Also, Jen? You deserve all the praise you get on this board, because it's all true.

I swear. If they ever make another Maniac Mansion ADVENTURE GAME I will make my own Green Tentacle costume, and dance around in it publicly. Pictures will be taken, you will see them.
Also, on a MM-note, didn't Maniac Mansion turn into a TV-series at one time or another?
I vaguely remember.

You're going there, we're not responding... lmao
Yes I remember Maniac Mansion... The Show wasn't completely based on the game and it only lasted a few weeks, don't even think they bothered putting it out on VHS... It bombed Hard...
Now Tex on the other hand, that could be a Great Prime Time Show... hmmmm
*I really need to stop rambling...*
