Re: 'Adult' Tex Murphy

That was a lot to take in but I gather the short version of this post is, "my vision of Tex is [insert vision here], I disagree with your vision of [insert other person's vision]."Bafitis wrote:Everyone is entitled to their opinion... Murder/Death is all over the news and has been in kids' movies/cartoons for years... The murders/killings/deaths in Tex Murphy have never been even close to gruesome...
As for the sexual content, I don't see where any of it has been that racy... If you get on some downtown buses, you can see more there than you ever have in a Tex Murphy game...
I started playing Tex when I was 14, I've seen some people post here that said they were even younger when they started... I started with Martian Memorandum... Took my another 2 years before I was able to find a copy of Mean Streets... Things were as easy to find back than as they are nowadays... Didn't have the internet to purchase and download or ebay to go and buy a copy...
They show shows like George Lopez, Home Improvement, Friends, and That 70's Show on Nickelodeon... Those shows have Episodes that are far more racy than any scene I've come across in Tex... Their language is worse than anything I've heard in Tex as well...
If you don't think Teenagers or younger are seeing dark and sensual stuff, you should take a day and watch children channels a bit, you just might be surprised what you see... It ain't all Tom and Jerry or Bugs Bunny anymore... Again, these are Children Channels, if a parents wants to block that stuff out they might as well unplug the TV entirely...
I could probably go out to a middle school and find you a 14 year old that could sit down and give you an intellectual conversation about Zombies... Now I think we can agree that the Zombie Movies {and new show} are done in a relatively Adult manner...
Trust me, unless they try to film Tex in a Skin-A-Max fashion, they aren't going to push the threshold of a young teen...
Big Finish's obligations aren't strictly to the Backers on Kickstarter... If that's what you think then their target audience is extremely small and there's little point to doing this at all... Their Obligation is to bring Tex to a New Level and to bring in NEW players to make Tex so popular that a 7th game will be considered... As of now we've got 3,700 backers... We might end up with 5,000 by the end, maybe 5,500... If those are the only people that Big Finish is targeting they might as well close up shop now and not even bother with the trouble... Because none of those people are going to pay for the game when they've already been given it as a Reward for donating to the creation of it... So if the backers are the only customers Big Finish needs to care about, then they aren't going to make any money they are just going to break even...
I'm a backer on Kickstarter, so does that mean they should make 2 separate games??? One "Adult" Tex for you and a milder one for me???
Teenagers are the ones that get their parents to spend money on video games... Because lets face it, the population of adults that have time for video games isn't exploding at the seams... I haven't played a Video Game in about 5 years now... Why, because I simply don't have the time... I have a job, I have a child, I have other family, I have a house, I have pets, I have an active social life, and I have personal projects that have to get done, among other things that come up in life...
I'll make time for video games I feel are worth it... Such as Tex... Once this game comes out next year {provided they have few technical difficulties} or early 2014, I plan on taking Vacation time just to play it...
My list of games that I would like to play is quite long, but Tex would certainly out rate any of them...
I fail to see what is wrong with keeping Tex the way we all fell in love with it all to begin with... Why change it??? If you want a different game and a different structure then go play a different game... I thought we were all here because we wanted another Tex game, and now you're all sitting here debating on how to change it... If you change it, it isn't going to be another Tex game... Sure it will be Tex Murphy and it will be continuing his story, but it won't be a Tex game like everyone is use to...
Discussions have gone on here before, what if they did Tex this way or that way and others would chime in, no Tex needs to be done in FMV with puzzles and this and that... And now you want to change Tex's personality by making him darker and whatnot??? How will it be a Tex game with a different Tex???
I for one would hate the game if it ended up with a Tex like the Boulevard of Broken Dreams, all Dark and Self Centered...
Tex stands for what's good even if he has to lose in the end, at least he did it for the right reasons... His witty jabs wouldn't be the same if he were a darker person...
You're trying to change what makes Tex, Tex... And I just disagree...
But I'll shut up now and leave my 2 cents at the door...
So really, you're simply expressing the same thing everyone else is in that it's a subjective opinion of something we all have an interest in. For that reason, I refer to an earlier quote of yours:
Couldn't we easily say the same to this argument? That is, you're "...trying to be selfish..." in the way you're trying to preserve a particular version or moment in the TM franchise rather than explore other potential creative ideas? For me this is a problem because it's one of the things that the ill-fated Duke Nukem Forever suffered from. Many of the reviews criticised DNF for being a shadow of its former self in the way it possessed the same demeanour, personality, tone and overall feel of DN3D.Bafitis wrote:So why would you want to take this part of the audience of Tex away??? It sounds like you are trying to be selfish and make the game in your own vision... If you want to do that, go make your own game and put whatever you want in it and target it to whoever you want to target it to...
TM doesn't need an overhaul. However, much like the differences between 3 FMV games themselves, the series needs to move forward in certain ways too. CJ even said words to this effect. I can't find the exact quote, but it was in RetroNick's interview where while AC/CJ are doing this for the fans, it would be a mistake to just play down to that fanbase by delivering a game that was all too familiar. In fact, CJ used DNF as an example of this.
